Broken Encore Hammer
« on: July 15, 2012, 04:01:59 PM »
Broke the hammer extension on my Encore. It has a hammer extension on it so I assume over a period of time it weakened it from the extra weight and finally broke. Has anyone replaced theirs? If so, how difficult is the process? If the part can be ordered, I'm thinking about getting the swing style to eliminate the potential issue again. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks, Fletch

I had a hammer break on me a few months back. It was the pivoting type on the Encore Pro Hunter and I also had an extension on it. Pulled back the hammer, it broke off, and the gun fired. Thank goodness it was aimed down range. Smith and Wesson sent me a new one for free. The pivoting types are easy to replace and I ordered an extra in case it happens again. I can pull back the hammer without the extension, so I won't use them on that gun. S&W will convert Encore hammers to the pivoting type, not sure of the cost.  Jim Hendershot does fine trigger jobs on Encores and Contenders <www.shotsgunsmithing.com/>.

Just curious...

Did you break the hammer or the extension that was on the hammer?...

Was it an after-market extension that was installed?...

Or do the Encores come with a hammer extension...

BCB, it was hammer extension, not the hammer itself. And yes it was an aftermarket aluminum extension.
Quick- Thanks for the info on TC installing a swing hammer, but I am looking to install it myself. Do they offer them for sale? Have the trigger tension just where I want it and prefer not to have them reset to factory spec. Thanks for the replies gentleman. Fletch

You mean the hammer spur which is part of the hammer, is what broke, the extension attaches to the spur.  ;) I dunno if they will sell the swing hammer, give em a call or email. Numrich standard factory hammers, but they're out of stock.

What a surprise I experienced today when I called S & W to check on purchasing a new replacement hammer. I explained clearly to the customer service rep that i indeed had an extension connected to the spur in order to obtain better purchase area, even though I knew it was "against" warranty specs. The gentleman explained to me that considering I was honest in explaining the hammer extension, he would have one in the mail to me by next week, no charge. Darn good customer service in my mind. Thanks for the replies gentleman, Fletch
