H&R 20 Gauge Tamer vs. Synthetic Youth Stock length
« on: July 18, 2012, 12:53:22 AM »
Does anyone have a picture of these two side by side?  Or the measurements of the two?  I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I am making an ATV snake gun.

Thanks,
-Kyle

LOP is listed on the H&R website, Tamer is 12½", synthetic compact Superlight is 11¾".

Well I ended up ordering the 20 gauge Tamer from Wally World.  It was $188 plus tax, which seemed a little high to me, but it's what I kinda wanted.

Of course I went in a pawn shop the next day and they have a 20 gauge youth model with synthetic stock for $80 OTD.  It's not in the greatest of shape, especially since it's not that old (NW serial number).  But that is perfect for what I'm looking for.

What I wished they made was a Tamer without the nickel finish.  I realize that the youth model is only 2 inches longer, but I would prefer it to be 18 inches really.  It is nice that it has the modified choke.  I'd like for my 9 year old to be able to dove hunt with it, but the barrel weight is what I think will cause him the most problems.

Oh well, I guess I should just go back and get the youth model just in case.  :)

I have a tamer 20 I hated the  "Tamer stock".  I ordered a synthetic adult stock and a survivor fore arm . Once installed it is the best " just to have a gun with you gun" I have tried   34 inches 5.05 lbs
It is wicked with the brenneke 20 ga. short magnum slugs  ( on both ends) :o

Well I picked up my gun on Friday from Wal-Mart.  They had a piece of paper on the box that said it came from Sports South LLC and was $160.01.  I gave $188 plus tax.
The fit and finish on the gun was perfect.  I was worried about the color of the nickel.  I never really remember seeing a Tamer in person, so I didn't know what to expect.  Some of the pictures on the internet are very bright, and some (as like plumberroy's below) are more grey.  Well mine is more grey, which is what I wanted, so I can use it to actually hunt with if needed.
Does anyone know if special care needs to be taken on the finish?  It may not be the same as what's on a S&W model 642 revolver, but there is some discussion about using Hoppes #9 on it (http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1980-present/209949-s-w-service-dept-dont-clean-642-revolver-hoppes.html).
Does anyone know where to get spare rubber grommets for the shell holder?  I'd like to have a few on hand.  I actually think a smidge larger would be better to hold the shell tighter.
I went up to the mountain on the four wheeler yesterday and it was fun to shoot!
Here's a pic of mine.  Note that the flash makes it a little brighter than it actually is:

Give Choate a call or email, they make all the synthetic stocks for H&R including the Tamer, I didn't find the shell holders on their site, but they have lots of stuff they don't list.

Congrats on the new Tamer! I picked one up this spring, deadly on woodchucks at close range with buckshot:

We put a Choate storearm on it right away, and have the synthetic stock ready to go. It'll look like Plumberroy's when we're done. If you tighten the screws on the rubber grommets they may expand enough to hold the shells better. Good Luck with yours!
