Olympics outdated?
« on: July 18, 2012, 03:06:26 AM »
I used to like watching the Olympics, but quit long ago because I just want to see the games. Not more ads than content, not human interest stories. Not reminisces on past Olympics. For me, it's become abstract. Something that is of the past even though it happens in the present. I remember timing it once, and during prime broadcast time for the Olympics there was about five minutes of games in a half hour.

By the way, talk radio is like that too for a lot  of shows and I quit listening to that. Maybe ten minutes per half hour, but it seems like less because it's so repetitive. Podcasts rule!

Well, you're going to get a lot of filler when a heat lasts 9.5 seconds and its 5 minutes between heats.

Now, Curling; that is some continuous action.
Wife throws it in to neutral when curling is on.
Its a fantasy life for an Alabama housewife.
I get home from work and get a recap of the Sweden/Norway match that afternoon.

I think anyone who has participated in one of the less popular sports has an appreciation for the dedication of the athletes in similar sports; the sports where the guy has put off his future and works at Home Depot or waited tables so he can train during the day to compete against folks in similar situations from around the world. They are the best in the world at what they do. When the games are over and they have had their 30 seconds on the Today Show, they're back to work.

Rowdy Gaines is the commentator for Olympic swimming. I was at Auburn when he was. To the Auburn community, he was "one of those swimmers"; in the swimming world, he was named "World Swimmer of the Year". I don't think many in Auburn appreciated his accomplishments, but we knew who the back-up safety on a 4-6 football team was.

I appreciate what some of those folks have to do to get there.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I liked it better when the athletes were amateur.  now they are pro, don't seem right.

The Olympics are a total farce. Most of the events are even sports anymore more like hobbies or pass times. They are even making Golf an Olympic event  ::) .

The farce continues as the whole Olympic ideal has been diluted by greed. Pistol shooting and ownerships is banned in the UK yet the Olympics are here despite the host countries compertitors having to train in France and Switzerland. They are graciously being allowed to have their pistols in the UK for the Olympics but the security demands are ludicrous and much tighter than those for other competitors.

Now they are trying to put a spin on the lack of ticket sales seems most of the Fottbal/Soccer events the stadiums will be almost empty of spectators. Prices are too damned high and when people tried to buy them were fobbed off with watching events that they didn't even ask for and now they have admitted even after giving away nealry 1/2 million tickets there are still over 1/2 a million unsold.

They have wasted millions on a temporary shooting set up at Greenwhich when the facilities already stand at Bisley yet that was too fart o travel ..................... yeah right about 17 miles out of London yet football is taking place in Cardiff, Scotland etc which is hundreds of miles from London and the sailing well that's down the south west also well over a hundred miles from London.

We won't be watching any of it and if the flood the tv with it well the tv can stay off.

How true  that is Swampman.................... How true.

They could have done much better things with the Billions this has and is costing.

However that would not put Lord Coe etc in the spot light nor allow him to travel the world o 1st class on freebie tickets for the last  six years or so. It's got bugger all to do with sport but a helluva lot to do with back handers, freebies, and getting ones mug in the spot light. Cameron will be there grinning like a fool along with his Politician buddies no doubt on another freebie.
