Dealing with the heat? How do you do it?
« on: July 18, 2012, 03:28:10 AM »
When it's really hot, I like to sweat when it first gets hot and, I like to stay hot all day. That gets me acclimated. Next day is much better. Then to cool off I'll take a couple of showers during the day and sit in front of a fan for a while. I'll change clothes during the day also. Other than that, I just let the good times roll. It has been a beautiful summer here. Hot but otherwise perfect, so I don't mind the heat.

since a large part of my heart is dead, it apparently affects my cooling system.  I get faint walking to the mailbox and back.  cold weather is rougher on me now too.
I need to find someplace where it's 75 degrees 24/7/365

I still get to work out side some days and sweat and drink water . also pouring a bit of cool water on my wrist seems to help as does a cool wet cloth on my neck. it was 103 here yesterday with high humidity index was 108 or such. the bad days are the ones we are in and out that takes a toll.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I hate the heat, there I said it, I am not in the least bit ashamed either. I moved to Mn. to avoid the oppresive humidity of Il. and I'm considering Yellowknife these past few weeks.  ;)  I am an olympic class sweat machine brother, I can sweat through a shirt leaving the house.

I deal with the heat by complaining and working through it mostly. I slow down at work, set a pace that won't kill me from heat exhaustion. When possible I schedule to work at night.

I find that a light hand towel dipped in cool water and draped around my neck does wonders, occasionally I'll whip it around in the air to get the heat out of it again. Another little trick, and I believe I invented this. I bought a 6' wide kiddie pool and put about 25# of Gold Bond powder in there. Of a morning I'll roll in that pool like a horse, getting a good dusting of that Gold Bond on me. ;D

EQ - if you posted a video of battering yourself in Gold Bond, it would go viral.

Down here in the deep south, I wear a Tilley hat when I am outside in direct sun with an ice pack under it or a wet bandana.  Then I do have a swimming pool.  I also have air conditioning.  I also have a lot of shade trees around the yard.  All help.

If I cut grass I wait until about 5pm.  If I work in my garden or other yard work, I do it at 6am when I am not at work.  Say about 6-10 or 11.  Then hop in the pool to cool.  I don't cut grass in the mornings because of heavy dew so the evenings are the time to cut, between 5-7pm.  Even after that I might hop in the pool.

Before the pool it was several showers a day.

To me if it is 92 and dry, it feels cooler than 92 with high humidity.  Upper 80's with high humidity is very hot and muggy.  Any outside projects, I do between late February and early June or late September to about Thanksgiving here.  Usually here between Thanksgiving and mid-February it is either rainy or cold.  Cold here isn't too bad as you can dress for it.  Only gets below freezing about 10-20 days a year.  Very rarely in the teens or low 20's, only 3-6 days out of the winter and usually in Jaunuary.  Good deer hunting weather to me down here is after Christmas and in January.  Snakes can still be crawling in October during bow season.

Last year, the last day we used the pool (heated) was October 27th.

As a welder in a heavy fab shop I don't have the luxury of taking cool showers or relaxing.

I've started wearing a couple of bandanas one on my head the other round my neck that I wet and rewet continually with cold water from the water fountain.

I also bring my cooler to the work station where in the first five hours of a 10 HR shift every day I  drink a 1/2 gallon of orange, apple or pineapple juice mixed a little weak.

Combine the above with lots of water and the occasional heat relief tablet. I also end up needing to sleep more when it gets really hot.

Well, I work in an air conditioned office or drive to jobsites to inspect projects in an air conditioned truck.  When I get out and have to walk a pipeline, I try to do that in the morning, again using a wet bandana under my hat or hard hat to keep cool.  It isn't too bad except when it gets above about 95.  There again, my contractors start work about 6:30 in the mornings during hot weather and knock off about 3pm with a 30 minute lunch.  Usually in the afternoons they are just backfilling and cleaning up unless it is a rush job.  They use EZups for shade over the welded joints on pipe or over where they plastic fusing joints, then move to the next joint.  Welding is done above ground, then after cooling and wrapping, the main is lowered into the ditch.  Large contractors move fast and may have as many as 4 welders going at one time leap frogging each other.  Smaller contractors with one welder takes longer, but I would rather work with them as it is easier to inspect.  Oh high stress mains (very high pressure) we have an x-ray crew x-raying all the welds, and I have to check them for problems.

My heart goes out to all those who work in an air condition office all day then have to walk through this heat to their car  to go home.
Being a brick layer I don't have that hot walk to the truck at the end of the day.
I get to be in the sun all day and get a tan for FREE !
I also get to shed alot of water weight everyday for free!
And everyone knows how enjoyable it is to be completely soaked in sweat all day long.
I'm sure glad I went into construction.
Some guys can't take the heat as well as I can and it affects them mentally
Lucky for me it doesn't bother me at all!
Lucky for me it doesn't bother me at akll
Lucky for me it...
Did I mention it didon't bodder me ?

I hate heat. I'll take a 30 degree day over any 90 degree day anytime. I work in a couple of buildings that house six 2500 horse power engines. On a 90 degree plus day, when we are working on one unit and the other six are running, it can reach temps around 115-120 degrees on top of one of the units. We have fans running, but them blowing hot air doesn't help much. Couple of guys I work with are always telling me they like the heat, then complain about how hot it is.
Even on weekends when I'm home and its in the 90's I don't feel like doing anything outside. To say the least I'm ready for October and November to get here. My favorite day is a crystal clear sky, no humidity, and temps around 60 to 70.

It's not so much the heat that bothers me it;s the humidity. When i am out in it I carry a wash cloth in my pocket because I sweet to beat the band when the humidity is up there. I would be more than happy if the humidity stayed down under 30%

You guys got it easy. I've never lived in a house with AC.

Having spent my whole life on the south plains it's never really been a problem. 98-100 degrees is just an ordinary summer day. 105 or so begins to get a person's attention though my solution was to just drink more water since there wasn't much else I could do. Now I get inside at that temperature.

I never lived in a house with cooling until I was grown and it's always been a swamp cooler. They are excellent in this area where the humidity is mostly in the single digits. I have no desire for AC.

When I hit 70 years of age the heat that summer seemed to bother me more than before and it has become a little worse ever year since. Up until then it was just "it's hot, so what? just another summer day". Now I usually knock off the outside work around 3 or 4 PM and get in the house where it's cool.

The heat wave broke here last week and the highs have been in the low to mid 90s. Really pleasant weather. The mornings have been in the mid 60s before sunup and that's a little cool with a good breeze blowing but perfect when the wind is calm.

You guys got it easy. I've never lived in a house with AC.

When I was growing up my parents would open up house and get a fan blowing out so it would draw the cool night air in. My dad was was always up before dawn and would shut the fan off, close the windows, and pull all drapes closed. As long as us kids didn't go in and out of the house 14 million times it statyed nice and cool in the house during the day.

Sitting here by the fireplace, with a small fire going to warm up the house.  House cooled down last night with the windows open into the 40s.  Been raining all day.  Temp was in the 50s with rain all day yesterday as well.  North Pole is cool, that's why I live here.

Actually I have been using the AC on the Jeep two or three days a week most of the summer.  Temps were in the 70s and 80s.  That's hot for us.  Again that's why I live in North Pole.

I grew up in Tennessee.  One July or August day the temp was well over 100, I was wearing only a pair of bib overalls and work boots.  I was topping Tobacco, covered with Tobacco gum,  sweating, and drinking over a gallon of water that morning.  By 2PM I swore if I survived that day, 1. I was leaving Tennessee never to return to live.  2. I was never going to be a Farmer.

That's why I live in North Pole.
Wish I could send you guys some of this rain.  Wettest summer we have had in a long time.  They are calling for rain next week, with temps in the 80s.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
