Building a set of gongs to shoot at with Weatherby 30-378 and 338-378s.  Ranges will be from 500 to 1000 yards.  Questioning what thickness metal plate I should use.  Don't mind dings, just don't want pass-throughs.

Suggestions from anyone with experience with these heavy hitters would be appreciated.  Rog

You might ask a piping contractor to sell you a used "blind flange".
It is a round disc with bolt holes to cap the end of a pipe.
Comes in various pipe diameters.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Our range went to 3/4" AR500 gongs, which seems to hold up to most rifles. But a 408 Chey Tac still put holes in the 750yd. gongs where the big 338s didn't even scratch it. He got a stern talking to.

Sour, The only ones I have ever used are are RR tie plates (between RR ties and the rail). I don't know about long range but at 100yds a 7 Rem mag. cratered them but wouldn't go through. However my 340 Wby w/250 gr Grand Slams and a max load of I-7828 punched a 1/2" hole through them like butter. I don't why the 7mm didn't go through (I don't remember the bullet but they weren't Grand Slams though). I had them hung on chains so they would swing, so my 2C worth-Muddy

If you go the blind flange route, don't get the cast one. Get the fully machined one. The cast one is only rated to a few hundred psi whereas the fully machined one is for higher pressures. And yes the fully machined ones are more expensive. Frank

Thicker than 1/2". That's what we used and even a 257 weatherby would shoot through them.

Thanks for all the input.  I was able to find 3/8s inch hardened plate ate a local welding shop.  The owner just gave me two 12 X 24 pices.  He charged me for the 36 X 36.  Now to make stands to hold those heavy pices.

338-378 is gonna be really hard on those 3/8" gongs. Better put them really far away!
