Savage Hog Hunter 111
« on: July 19, 2012, 11:17:53 PM »
I've been looking at the new Savage Hog Hunter 111.  It seems like a great little bugout gun.  It has sights and comes in .223, .308, and .338WM.  I thought about getting one for my wife.

I looked these over as well.   For every good point on this rifle, there seems to be a bad point. The super cheap, foreward flexing stock, seems to be what people just can't stand.

Assuming you are not interesting in using a can, then I think you may be better off by just buying  a regular Savage 11, with the accutrigger and accustock, and the standard weight barrel, and then having someone shorten the barrel to 20 inches for you.  You would also have to add iron sites, but that generally isn'' too hard.

And if the oversized bolt knob is important, I understand that you can  buy a replacement handle and just screw it on.

Yes, this would cost more, but then I think you would be starting out with a quality stock, and not have the ugly thread protector hanging out on the end.

i agree manny. i think savage is riding the coattails off the popularity of hog hunting. this rifle doesnt seem all that nice or particularly durable. and i really cant see what is so 'special' about this rifle.
i think that anyone could build a rifle that'd be better suited to chasing hogs.
silencers are now legal where i live.. and for the most part no one cares and the hog hunters certainly aint runs them on thier rifles..
they are just ugly and the threaded end on the savage is trouble waiting to happen

It's something that nobody else makes and it's only $415.00.  It has the same stock as any other plastic stocked Savage, it has sights, it has the perfect barrel length for a .308, and it comes in .223 for the ladies.  It's a throw away rifle.  A detachable 10 round mag would be good.  I wasn't interested in it for hog hunting or any kind of game hunting really.  I'd rather not have the threaded muzzle but it won't hurt anything for what I had in mind.

Swampman,

    I agree.   It's pretty interesting.

Maybe you can answer a question.   When they say that this is a 20 inch barrel, is that how it measures out to the very end of the screw-on thread protector?   Or, does the thread protector add an extra inch or so?

If I got one, I would actually like to find a thread protector that added an extra inch, so that the rifle wouldn't be so butt heavy.

I also agree, that the .223, with detachable 10 round mags, would really be the forte for this rifle.  Just too many other .308s out there that would be more suitable for hog hunting or any other big game hunting.  You casually mentioned a shtf rifle a few days ago, and this might be a good candidate.

You could always add a better drop in stock later.

(I wonder if anyone has tried to stiffen the forestock by drilling a long hole from the front face of the forestock, all the way to the mag well, squirting in a layer of high grade epoxy, and putting a long stainless steel bolt in it.  You could then seal up the front hole.)

I believe the thread protector adds about 1/8".  They make unventilated flash hiders that might work.  Boyd's makes a laminated stock that I believe would work.  They make conversions kits that would let you have a magazine but in the end the cost would be about that of the Ruger Gunsite Scout.  It would be easy to add some rigidity with epoxy and metal rods.

After doing a search on them, I'm definitely liking the iron sights, and the large bolt handle !! Just might have to look into one of those for later on..

I like the 1 in 9" twist for heavier bullets. The open sights and lighter weight have me leaning toward this gun instead of the MVP. I really don't like having any gun without open sights.

oh man good old iron sights are the best for hunting or defense and if nothin else they make great back up to your scope or red dot!!! i really wish more rifle makers would realize this and at least make it an option when buying any rifle. i really like this hog hunter the only thing i'd change is a detachable magazzine.... maybe the stock later if it pissed me off? i'd give it a chance though  ;D

A friend of mine helped out at Savage Range Day at their range and the Hog Hunter in .308 was a tack driver for all who shot it.  I was considering one but fell into a lightly used Howa for a great deal.

Well I don't have a Hog Hunter but I recently bought a 111 chambered in 25/06. I think that it must have the same stock as the HH however. I have only shot 2 groups with my rifle and it seems OK to me. The first group was a 100 grain Sierra Pro  Hunter and it produced a 7/8 inch three shot group. The second was using the 100 grain Hornady Spire Point and 3 shots went into 5/8 inch. Both groups were shot with H4831 powder.
I would imagine that Hog Hunter would be just as good or maybe better.

Hey SWAMPMAN, did you ever get the SAVAGE HOG HUNTER?  If so, what do you think? I bought a Weatherby Vanguard 25-06 a week ago to use on hogs in New Mexico when I move back there but I am getting the itch to buy the Savage.

I would buy one if they made it in .450 bushmaster or .450 SOCOM.  ;)  I've wanted a .45-70 bolt action for some time, but never came across one of those mauser actions that can take it.  They want too much for .458 winchester or .458 Lott, or I'd probably settle on one of those.
