TC 83 Rifle
« on: July 22, 2012, 09:48:31 AM »
I'm a great lover of single shot deer rifles.  Over the years my No. 45-70 and Savage 219 30-30 have gotten the most use.  I have a TC 83 with an 06 barrrel setup and a heavy barrel 22-250 set up.  Haven't used the 06 for some years and figured it was time to dust it off and use it this deer season.  I think they are a great rifle even with the screwy safety they have anyone else shooting and hunting with 83s or the latter Hunter version?  If so where is a good place to find other barrels?

There's a board for  TC Encore/Contender and TCR Rifles close by and you might get more responses there. I had some TCR barrels for sale and may have been asking too much but now think I will keep them all. One can still find them for sale with an internet search. The goofy safety on a safety can be removed in a few minutes. It's been a while since I removed one on one of mt TCR's but it's not difficult, but it seems like one must remove the stock and drop the trigger guard. - DON

I have a 87 hunter and have a 7mm Rem. barrel that I use for deer with the Hodgdon reduced loads and a 120 grn bullet with H 4895 shoots great, as for barrels Ed's contenders has barrels some of the time, last time I checked he had an 06 a 270 and a 7mm Rem. Mag and a 243. They also show up at the very large gun shows from time to time.

I have been using a TCR-83 since 1984.  I love it.  I have .243, 7MM Mag, 30-06, .35 Whelen, .338 Win Mag, and 3 1/2" 12ga.  Have killed Mulies, Whitetail, Turkey, Caribou, Moose, Wolves, Hogs, and Grizzly with mine.  Sent it back in 1993 for the Mag conversion, and the .338 WM barrel.  Love that set trigger, makes for a good long distance shooter.  I have mine set for just ounces to set it off once the trigger is set.  I never use the safety, I don't load the gun till I am ready to shoot.  The only thing I don't like is the internal hammer, but I've lived with it for 28 years.  I absolutely hate the Encore.  Thought it would be a great gun and maybe replace the TCR, no way.  I'll keep my TCR.

Sourdough, you sound old and crotchedy like me.  I totrally agree with you.  That's why my favorite deer rifles are the Aristocrat 06 and a Savage 219 in 30-30.  For varmits I just put the 22-250 barrel and forend on or take another 219 in .22 K-Hornet.  Do love the simplicity, guess that kinda describes me too.

Oops, I forgot I had a 22-250 barrel for the TCR-83 as well.  Haven't done much with that barrel yet.  I'm always shooting .223s and just have not taken the 22-250 out.
