Mosin Nagant Model 38
« on: July 24, 2012, 04:39:03 AM »
I purchased the Model 38 but noticed that when they did a factory rework they not only reamed out the initial 1/4" of the barrel but that the first 2 inches of rifling is gone.  How bad will that affect basic accuracy?

I would not expect much from it. Likely if they did that, the rest of the rifling is in rough shape as well. Did you slug it yet?

Counterboring (the 1/4" you mention) was a common re-arsenal practice, done to restore accuracy - due to damaged barrel crown.  But, not sure what you mean by "the first 2 inches."  Do you mean at the breech end (throat) or the barrel end?
Regardless, shoot it to test for accuracy - the target will tell.  Most military rifles of the day were expected to hold about 3" @ 100 yds. with issue ammo.

Yes, the counter boring was typical, but when I look down the barrel below the counter bore it is missing the rifling for another 2 "
