Tip Off Ring question
« on: July 24, 2012, 06:05:38 AM »
I have a Webley Tomahawk in .22 cal. and cannot keep the rings from slipping. I am useing Burrius 11 mm Tip Off mounts and cannot tighten them enough to keep them from sliding. Any suggestions?

Would the 3/8" work better?
You could buy cheap ones at Walmart and see, before you bought nice ones.

the rings need to have a stop pin in them to keep them from slipping. also on a gun with the power level of the tomahawk, you want to use a 1 piece base. go to pyramyd air and order a one piece from leapers(about 20 bucks) go to pyramydair.com they have a phone number to call and they are very helpful and will set you up with what you need. that gun is a powerhouse and you will NOT get regular dovetail mount for a 22 to hold for you

plus one. Air rifles are a different beast. Also, they aren't to be held as tight as a big rifle for the best groups.

Before you spend money, try some Locktite on the clamp edges and mount grooves; sometimes that's enough to stop the creep.

Also, have you considered installing your own stop screw or pin.  Drill a small hole for the pin with a cheap drill bit.  Now cut off a small section of the shank end of that drill bit with Dremmel cutoff disc or whatever you have.  Now bond or Locktite that in the hole.  Problem solved.

the tomahawk is a 20+fpe magnum springer. you will save yourself a ton of time and headaches by just getting a  one piece mount. i have over 30 magnum and "super magnum" springers and i've tried it all.. believe me. you can try the drill trick, but you are probably not goin to be happy with the results! been there done that. works ok for a plinking level gun,not a hunting gun

Well I got a 1 piece mount and cranked down all 3 screws as tight as I thought i could without twisting them off, and it just slid back a little less at a time. I put lock tight along both sides of the T mount. I`ll try it tommrow and see if I`ll have to drill it and screw it.  ::)  Now the question is , will I whip it, or will it wipe me.  :'(

Been through this myself, with a turkish made webley tomahawk and Longbow. Sweet rifles but the lack of a stop pin hole has caused a lot of folks issues. I cured this by using a BKL 260 one piece mount. The 6 screw base holds forever. The 2 screw rings still allowed a bit of slippage so I used a strip of electrcal tape on the scope tube. Many hundreds of shots later they have not moved again. BKL makes great stuff.  J

I loaded both of the groves with loack tight and it is holding. Problem now is that I can`t get it to group worth a crap. I put a cheap air rifle scope on it, $ 40, and I`m wandering if it`s any good. As hard as it shoots I sure would like to take it hunting. It hasn`t whipped me yet, but I haven`t whipped it eather.  :-[

Catfish, many of those barrels are lothar walthers believe it or not. Webley outsourced them when they moved from the U.K. to turkey and so long as you can feel the muzzle is choked when you push a patch through from breech to muzzle you got one. They are EXTREMELY accurate and although mine shoots jsb 8.3gr better than anything else, they shoots a variety of pellets well. I will go so far as to say that both guns are/were as or more accurate than most any breakbarrel i've ever fired and theres been many dozens. I'd put money on the scope as being the culprit although you may expect some erratic shooting for the first few hundred shots if  the rifle is breaking in. Since you have to use springer rated scopes on these guns, i've found the leapers and centerpoint scopes to do well at a fair price(4x tactical UTG 35.00) but I prefer the lighter weight and better glass offered by Hawke scopes. My Hawke sport 3x9x40 AO HD is about 100 bucks but is the perfect scope on my longbow. Hope this is of some help,. Jeff
