Angry widow says, my husband DID build that.

Someone else made that happen? Business owners know hard work, long hours lead to success -- and an early grave  By Perry Chiaramonte
Published July 24, 2012
FoxNews.com
  •    The family of Philadelphia cheesesteak king Joey Vento, who died last year, say he owed his success to brutal hours and hard work.
  •    David Ruff's father, Edward (l.) and his uncle, Lonnie (r.) started building their family business when they were just kids on bicycles.
Next Slide Previous Slide   Long hours and hard work helped Joey Vento build a landmark restaurant in Philadelphia from the ground up, but that work ethic may have also sent him to an early grave.
That's why Eileen Vento's blood boiled when she heard President Obama declare last week that small business owners like her husband owed others for their success.
“That is ridiculous. My husband had $6 in his pocket when he started.” Vento said to FoxNews.com about Joey Vento, who opened Geno’s Steaks in 1966 in the neighborhood of South Philly.

“He worked hard his whole life to build the place up. We made a lot of money. Unfortunately he didn’t get to enjoy it.”
- Eileen Vento, widow of cheesesteak king Joey Vento
“He worked hard his whole life to build the place up. We made a lot of money. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to enjoy it,” she added.
Vento worked at the shop right up until a heart attack killed him last August at age 71. His widow believes 45 years of toil to build a prosperous life for his family took a toll on him. She bristled at the comment Obama made during a campaign stop in Roanoke, Va., last Friday when he said business owners owed some of their success to help along the way, noting that government often provides the infrastructure needed for success.
“If you got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen,” Obama said. "If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive."
The comments created a backlash among small business owners and others across the country who feel that entrepreneurship is the backbone of the American economy. Vento's sister-in-law said Joey Vento owed his success to his own hard work and the loyal customers he cultivated.
“He went there at 3 or 4 in the morning and stayed until 11 every night. He did it seven days a week,” said Diana Vergagini. “And when he wasn’t there he'd call in at every shift change asking, ‘How did we do? What’s the bread count? What’s the steak count?’”
Vento gained national notoriety in 2006 when he posted a sign at the order window that read, “This is America: When ordering please ‘speak English.’”
The president's slight of entrepreneurs also riled David Ruff, owner of Petit Jean Meats, in Morrilton, Ark. He said his father and uncle began building the business in the 1920s, when they were kids and would deliver meat on their bicycles throughout the town, located an hour north of Little Rock. They spent their lifetimes making it a success, and Ruff remembers his father Edward's pride when they built a new 70,000-square-foot facility in the 1980s.
"When you start work at 12 years old and at 73 to see what it has become...," he said. "You can't help but be proud of that."
Edward Ruff died of heart failure in 1990 at age 73, but he lived to see the company he devoted his life to become a success. And his son, who now oversees a business that employs 70 people and has annual sales of $14 million, resents any implication that Petit Jean Meats was built on anything but generations of sweat.
"There wasn't a handout," David Ruff said. "We had to borrow the money from the bank. We didn't have any guarantee.
"This is what the president doesn't understand, the risks that people take."
"People work their tails off for 20-30 years before they see a return."

Well we have producers and we have parasites. Simple as that.

I guess we had to expect that ...but those of us who have had to work hard for a living..with no handouts, can  exactly understand her concerns..
Likely, the obummer spent much of his life on some kind of government handout or another, so naturally he would think that "everybody does it"..

Really don't expect much different from Obama. Everything has been handed to him his whole life, college education and political career. Only thing he knows is how to ask for is somebody else's money. He's just on the other side of the spectrum. Instead of asking for soame ''stash'' money, he's looking for that $1,000 a plate money. Usually from Hollywood idiots and Soros left wing billionare types out to destroy the country. The only thing Obama can build is a deeper hole for this country to fall in. gypsyman

Obama's "...you didn't build that." comment was in reference to bridges and roads. It was taken out of context and spliced to make it sound like he was telling business owners they did not build their businesses. That is a favorite tactic of the Republican Party--- they cut and paste soundbites to frighten and outrage just like Rush, and their followers follow along like sheep. Now, if you are a small business owner, did you build your own road? How about any bridges on that road? If the answer is no, then Obama is right. Deal with the real.

Not quite accurate Needles...  Obummer gave all kinds of reasons why the person who worked hard, slept little and risked much..should not get credit for building his/her business.
First, he says it is our wonderful capitalist system (which he is trying to destroy) then it is any of a number of peripheral reasons.  Please view the video of his speech below, and isolate for me, the point where he gives the individual businessman ANY credit for his/her own success..

Regressive Republicans should put their money where their mouths are. Next time they want to build a business, put it where there are no roads, no cell service, no power lines, no telephones, basically bare ground. If that business succeeds, then they get to say Obama is wrong.

Obviously, you haven't listened to the uncut, unedited version of the speech.  Even if you cut Obama some slack for getting his words out of order, he goes on in his spiel to validate that he meant what he said--"sucessful people didn't get there on their own."

Let's just say that Obama has some kind of point; what is his purpose in making it?  It is to minimalize those who have worked their butts off to make it and to rationalize the effort to take more and more from those who have made something of themselves.  It is nothing more than his way of trying to legitimize his redistribution philosophy--most commonly known as communism.

Exactly what the hell is your point?  Nearly everything you listed was built by private enterprise and in many cases, even the roads were built and paid for by private funds.  Do you really think that government's responsibility is to create and build everything?

I've already paid my taxes, for fifty some odd years now. I guess what makes me NOT a conservative is that I don't complain about the taxes I've paid--- I've paid more than most, since I never had children. I have accepted that the government costs something to run. And it costs more now than it did when I was a child, because there are more than twice as many people living here now. (about 150 million in 1950, according to US Census office.)  And unless people stop breeding like bunnies, the cost of government will continue to go up. Private contractors may build roads and bridges, but those contracts were paid out of public funds. So, so far, Obama is correct--- and I saw the original version of the video. In fact, for anyone who was in the military, THEY were paid out of public funds, too. Since the military is non-profit, that makes the US military the largest socialist organization in history. Without the protection of that military, bloated as it is, who can say there would be a country to build a business in? And, seriously, isn't it time to cut the military by at least 30%? We currently fly over half the warplanes that have ever existed on the planet.

And by the way, I AM a small business. My finances are completely unaffected by the health care law.

Guess what? The infrastructure is there and all are free to use it! I have a radical suggestion: instead of people sitting on their asses and whining and screaming for a handout perhaps they should get up and go out and use that wonderful infrastructure that the government "paid" for and start their own business. Dont expect that you should be given "your share" because you are too lazy to use those great things that others made happen like roads and bridges and internets etc. to make your own thing happen.  If you dont play you dont get paid.

Some of you might not be familiar with a heck of a lot of business locations where the roads and every last utility actually is financed and built by private investment.  I could show you acres and acres of these developments in my state and Obama and his ilk had absolutely nothing to do with it.  And neither did the masses of overtaxed working folks--many of which are damned happy to have the work these industrial parks provide.

Can someone tell me exactly what was Obama's point in attempting to belittle those who have taken it upon themselves to jump all the government hoops, risk their own money, literally in some cases work themselves to death and provide jobs for untold millions?  What is wrong with that fool?  Never mind--I know exactly what is wrong with him.  He is a G***mned communist with his head stuck in a dark smelly place.

Businesses were built BEFORE roads were built.  People that made things or raised things decided to PAY TAXES for paved roads and bridges so they could get their goods to market.  So you liberals got it wrong again.  My great grandfather had a country store before the roads were paved.  People would come to him to buy things.  It was a general store that sold everything from sugar and flour, which came in barrels and had to be weighed, to nails, bridles, any type of things a farmer would need.  People had to travel on dry days to a country store or a nearby town to sell their goods and buy things manufactured.  They finally decided to add tax to gasoline to make paved roads.  Oh, Henry Ford suggested this.  So businesses were built BEFORE roads.  Roads in subdivisions today are PAID FOR by the developers, then once they meet approvals are taken over by the city or county and maintained by them.  IT WAS PRIVATE INVESTMENT INITIALLY that built the roads.  Only thing the government does is maintain them.  Granted once roads started being paved, FEDERAL tax on gasoline was added to build the US highway system before WWII, then the interstate system afterwards.  IT WAS PRIVATE people, industry, and business, who paid the taxes for the roads to be built.  Money for Federal expenditures doesn't come from the themselves (unless they deficit spend out of thin air, which causes inflation) but from taxes off private business and individuals.

Oh, and where I live, ALL the utilities were built and installed by private companies, NOT government, INCLUDING the road in front of my house, by the development company who bought the land, paid a surveyor to divide the land into lots, and surveyed the location of the road, the road was built by a private contractor for the developer, the developer paid for the water and sewer to be installed and tied into the city system.  Power, gas, phone, and TV cable were all installed by private companies, (because they wanted to get customers).  The street once passing inspection was given to the city for maintenance.  NO govenment money except maintenance, like fixing potholes and resurfacing AFTER it was GIVEN to the city.

Most roads IN AMERICAN history were just dirt wagon roads hacked out of the wilderness and used by everyone.  Common law in most states say that if the road is used by the PUBLIC for more than 7 years it becomes a county, city, or state road.  Then taxes were raised to pay for paving.

You liberals need to get your history and facts straight, people built business first, then roads and railroads were built to get goods to market.  Railroads were and are privately owned tracks.  They were built to get farm goods, timber, etc to markets were factories were built and goods processed into finished products.  Most factories were originally built along creeks, rivers, where water could be dammed up for power to make flour, weave cloth, or turn lathes for machining metal.  Govenment didn't build these factories, or work the farms.  Most cities originally were built along rivers because the river was the road.

Rivers were the first mass means of transportation in America, the Mississippi river system could go from Pittsburg to New Orleans.  From Minneapolis to New Orleans.  I don't know how far up the Missouri system they could travel.  No government started all these cities or business along these rivers.  Even in Alabama where I live, Tuskaloosa, Montgomery, Selma, to Mobile were all river cities, as well as up the Tennessee River.  Later railroads were built to connect a lot of the cities where rivers weren't  They were all privately owned.  It wasn't until we got California that the government gave land to railroad companies to build the transcontinenal railroads.  The west was explored, traveled over by wagon train years before the railroads came.  They came to get to the new markets.

Modern government is a parasite on the capitalist system.  Sometimes it provides a benefit, sometimes it overburdens the capitalist system until it becomes like the Soviet Union, too big, and it falls under it's own weight.  Most of the problems today can all be traced to some type of government meddling in the system to get things the way whoever is in power wants it to be.  We wouldn't have had the housing crisis which caused this recession, if it weren't for he govenment changing the rules banks loan money in 1998 when Clinton was in office.  Arms were twisted when banks refused to make loans to poor or minorities to buy a home.  So they were made to loan the money.  They came up with stupid plans like ARMS, no interest for 5 years, etc.  When the rates went up and the interest had to start being paid, people couldn't pay it and forclosures started and snowballed.  This was BOTH political parties fault, not just Bush.  Clinton and the Republican congress came up with this hair brained skeem which put is in this situation.  We had no health care problem UNTIL we signed FREE TRADE agreements, and MOST FAVORED NATION trading status with certain countries.  Like Ross Perot said, a giant sucking sound took our manufacturing overseas, and along with it good paying jobs with health care benefits. This happend under CLINTON, not Bush.  Bush just went along with it, but spent too much money on wars without taxes to support them.  Bombing would have done just as good a job, if not better, and cost a whole lot less money.  Not just slap on the wrist bombing, but serious destroy infrastructure, military installations, roads bridges, railroads or whatever to get their attention.  It worked in Serbia, why not Iraq?  Afganistan could have been put into the dark ages too.

Regressive Republicans should put their money where their mouths are. Next time they want to build a business, put it where there are no roads, no cell service, no power lines, no telephones, basically bare ground. If that business succeeds, then they get to say Obama is wrong.

  I'm pleased you feel that way;
Therefore, whatever you may have earned or accumulated over your lifetime until now, you should be willing to share.  Since Magooch and I have paid taxes for many years  to help build these roads, power lines etc...then perhaps you ought to give us some of that dirty money we helped you to earn.
I suggest perhaps 10% to Magooch..I'll settle for 5%..     If you send it by pay pal... can I expect it to arrive in time so I can buy that new lawn tractor  from home Depot next week ?  ;)

NOW who's asking for a handout?  8)

Not asking for a handout...I just want my 5%..because of the roads, bridges, communications systems which my taxes helped to build.  I should hope you would send that 5% post haste..since you have a small business..for which you did not contribute labor, risk, funds, concern or sweat..   ;)   ;D

Not what Obama said at all. And you're assumed 5% is in negative numbers compared to what you owe me for paying extra for your kids. Oh, you only get your refund if you have never used that infrastructure, so try again.

Just look at Obamas background.  Who he associated with.  At the very least he is a Fabian socialist.  He is following the communist propaganda.  Study the truth about communism.  IT DOESN'T WORK.  SOCIALISM DOESN'T WORK.  IT EVENTUALLY CRASHES IN ON ITSELF.  Europe is being propped up by Germany, the most capitalist country in Europe and they are getting tired of it.  WE ARE CRASHING IN ON OURSELVES BECAUSE the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS TOO BIG AND IS STIFFLING GROWTH.  Go to a community college somewhere and take a couple of courses in Economics.  Maybe you libs will understand.  I admit Republicans are just as guilty of allowing big government to grow as Liberals.  However, at least it was in military and military production, not WELFARE PROGRAMS WHERE MONEY IS JUST HANDED TO PEOPLE.  FDR did not want to give people money or food commodities in the Great Depression because he said people would LOOSE the WORK ethic.  He started building programs and reforestation programs etc.  Helped but wasn't the cure.  WWII was the cure when people had to do without things for the war effort, then they had a pent up demand after the war for things.

I don't mind the government building roads, bridges, things that are needed.  I do mind the government continuing to give away money and food stamps.  At some point it has to stop.  The feds can't afford it anymore.  People are going to have to go back to work.  Why are there not jobs?  Well the FEDS are in the way of jobs.  Allow drilling on government leased land.  Allow offshore drilling.  Relax the controls on coal burning, at least until the economy gets better.  Don't tax corporations who manufacture things so as to bring back a lot of our manufacturing base.  Get out of the health care business.  Allow insurance companies to cross state lines for competition and limit malpractice lawsuits.  Lots of little things they can do that would kickstart private business growth.  Allow pipelines to be installed.  Alaska was promised a railroad from Fairbanks through Canada to the lower 48, it was never built.  That is something that could be built.  It is about 800 miles along the Alaska Highway.  But goods and raw materials could be sent and recieved through this channel instead of just ships and planes.  No more bailouts of failed companies.  Just let them be divided up with other companies buying off their assets, including banks.

Germany? BWAAAH! HA! HAA! The poster child for universal health care in a capitalist society! 8.2% health payroll tax! I'm not laughing at Germany: I'm laughing at anyone who would use them as an example, being as how they are doing the things we SHOULD be doing. Like it or not, if conservatives had addressed the health care crisis, instead of saying there was no such thing, they would probably still be in control. Germany! That's a good one!

Needles, read "The Road to Serfdom".  Germany has private health care.  They have manditory coverage, and they cover the bottom 10% who are either too poor or disabled, and they cover the retired people.  Switzerland is about the same.  Now, we didn't even copy them, we created a mess.  My wife has downloaded the entire 2,000 page health care bill.  It is stupid and a mess.  IF WE GET OUR INDUSTRY BACK AND WORKING, we wouldn't have a health care problem.  85% of Americans were basically covered from the 1950's until the end of the 80's when we started letting our industry move overseas.  That created about 15% more people without insurance.  We could have kept our industry, then expanded Medicare/Medicaid just a little to cover the uninsured.  No problem, just tweeking the system.  Not complete destruction of it.  One more bad thing to come out of the health care bill as reported by MSNBC is it will destroy research money for new cures for disease.

Ok, why did Angela Merkle get mad at the Greek Prime Minister and say "Why does Germans retire at 62, and Greeks retire at 50, and you can't pay your retirees pention and want us to pay for it.  Raise your retirement age."  Greece responded by raising it to 55 and they rioted.  Stupid is as stupid does.  I am of the 52% who have to pay taxes, I'm tired of supporting the 48% who do not.  I have three kids who worked at local grocery stores.  The said people came through buying steaks and good food, paying for them with food stamps or a food stamp card now, and get into Lincolns, Lexus's, Caddies, etc.  Said they were well dressed also.  Why is that?  Why is 85% of the utility bills in "Poor" neighborhoods" always go to women, yet when a service man goes to their house, there is always a man there?  Why does a single mother with 3 kids, given food stamps, a welfare check, and section 8 housing allowance, and Medicaid for the kids, that totals more than minimum wage?  No need to work.  Kids also get free meals at school, so the food stamps can get them steaks, shrimp, very good food.  It is getting old.  If we keep going down this socialist path, regardless of who is in office that pushes a socialist program, we will colapse under a mountain of debt.  Then there will be no money for any government program.  We will esssentially have no Federal goverment, then only states with balanced budgets will survive and will probably form different "confeterate" regions to try to hold things together.  There will be riots in the inner cities when people can't get their free stuff.  It could be chaos because if our military and law enforcement can't get paid, they will walk off the jobs, go home to protect their families.

What happens when and if an EMP solar flare happens to knock out the entire American power grid and computer system like it did the telegraph system back in 1858?

What happens when and if there is a pandemic that kills hundreds of people and the economic system colapses because of no workers.

One must be as independent as possible and not rely on the BIG Government handouts, welfare or corporate welfare.  Things will fall apart, riots will start.  Only those who have prepared can survive it.

We can all survive IF we CUT big government out, and get back to true independent individual capitalism.  Big corporations need to be broken up so there would be more competition with lower prices.  We have to get our industry back.  We have to break up the big banks.  Large banks and corporations can't get "to big to fail".  That is not the way it was intended for America.

I noticed with the independent did-it-all-by-myself crowd evrything is all peachy until things go wrong...then its labor, unions, laws regulations, stupid employees, taxes crumby help, obama's policies, etc., etc....to the extent of demanding relief, aid and bailouts..  Its the same old song and dance>>>  privatization of profits: socialization of costs
.
...TM7

Sad, isn't it. And all the unions in the country don't equal a single big capital lobbyist who can buy the country, not to mention a capitalist politician. Look at Nitt--- he's in London to get financial backing from the big 5 international banks (whose earnings were $800 TRILLION last year), without the US press having access. Goldman Sachs alone, whom GW bailed out by handing them a check (not loans, like Obama) has $49 TRILLION just in derivatives--- about 35% of their total holdings. By the way, NONE of these banks have created a single job. But, God forbid they would have to pay TAXES! The world will end! Everyone's manhood will fall off! The sky will fall!

Kinda funny that the parasite class is so stupid that they cannot understand that the "infrastructure" was paid for by taxes paid by people and businesses. It is akin to lice thinking that the host creature didn't produce the blood they feed off of. Face it liberals you are sponges and parasites you have no more value to the world than the fertilizer value of your decomposing bodies. Face it you are living off the roads and bridges that were mostly paid for by the rich.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.
