357 Mag to 35 Remington

357 Mag to 35 Remington, is this possible?? Obviously I'd need an SB2 receiver, different extractor (maybe one for a .473 rim dia case), reamer, and head space gauges. Anyone ever done this??

Yup, had a smith rechamber my first 357 Maxi ejector barrel(see rimless conversion in the FAQs) to 35 Rem about 7yrs ago, it's easier on an extractor barrel, just swap out the extractor. It's not a rechamber that should be done by hand. MSP_ret has one too.

Welcome Steven!

It's a simple straightforward re chamber. Any smith worthy of the name cut his teeth with this kind of job. Talk to people in your gun club or at your LGS. I'm sure you have someone that will be recomended in your area.

With a lathe it's very much within the home tinkerers realm. It's just a bit too much to do by hand.

I had my .357 reamed to .356/.358 Winchester and CW did the same to his .35 Remington.  A lot more bang for the buck.

If a feller wants the most performance for their rechamber dollars, skip the 358/356 and go to a 35 Whelen or 35 Whelen Improved, my 22" 35 Whelen Imp Handi pushes 250gr Hornadys 2700fps, a standard 35 Whelen Handi will push the 225gr TSX 2800fps and I'm sure Doc and CW can provide some additional performance info.  ;D Twist for all of em is ~1:16", so that's not really a factor.

The 356/358 qualifies for that, they've never been offered from H&R, the others have(cept for the Whelen Ai).  ;)

Tim is spot on,
A 35 Whelen IMP would do anything a 357mag, 357max, 35Rem, 356, 358 or 35Whelen could!!  Just cause you would have the HP you don't have to use it until its needed. When its needed, its sure NICE to have!!!

It would be no difference to the smith. Dies are not appreciably any more $$. It would shoot lead loads, my favorite bullet, the Speer 250grain will work at heavy 35 Rem ballistics all the way up to 358 Norma ballistics. A good cast 250-300G bullet would do even better!

Do some reading on these calibers and look at the big picture, keeping in mind if you want bigger later its gonna cost more $$. If you do it now its not appreciably any more $$...

As, 35 is the only Handi mid bore, and folks on here seem to like to go big or go home. I think a 35-348 Ackley loaded to higher pressure than the Model 71 would be about perfect. This cartridge in a 71 equals a Whelen, so hot rodding it should at least get to AI level with a rim.

I'm not looking for big, I already have big. (Ruger #1 in 375 H&H and a Rem 798 in 458 WM.) In regards to converting from 357 to 35 Rem, is it possible to hand ream?? I've read about several members hand reaming some pretty big stuff. Input is always welcome.

I wouldn't recommend it without checking with Fred at 4D, you risk ending up with an out-of-round chamber, then the only option is to ream to something bigger to clean it up. Give Fred a call and see what he says, he's a site sponsor and has the reamer. It's also a fair amount of metal to remove, I rechambered a 44mag to 444Marlin by hand, it took 2˝hrs and then hit a hard spot and had to finish it up with power, I'd never do it again or recommend it, it's just too much work.

I agree with Tim, Steve. It's too much to be done by hand.
Couple months ago I reamed a couple 17 HMR's to 17 Hornady Hornet, by hand. I clamped the barrel in my drill press and put a quill in the chuck and used it as a jig to keep the reamer square and true. (As true as the runout in my press at least) one was shoot able but accurate the second had a octagon chamber!!!  Larry was very mind and reamed it to 17 Fireball for me. Otherwise I made a tomatoe stake!

Goi g from 357 mag to 35 Remington is even more material to remove. I do not recomend it. Now if you have a lathe and know how to use it, SURE go ahead it's not difficult! Maybe 15 minutes work. As Tim said its hours by hand and you will very likely ruin it in the process.

If you do go from a .357 to a .35 Remington (a GREAT round and an excellent choice) you will need an ejector from a 30-06. .308, or .270, and be sure to add the little ejector lifter button to the ejector mechanism since you are going from a straight rimmed cartridge to a rimless, that is if it is an ejector barrel. I don't have any bottleneck extractor barrels (and don't want any either) so I am unsure of the cheaper extractor mechanism.
My .35 has been flawless and I consider it much better and much more saleable (if I ever wanted or had to sell it) than one of the more offbeat calibers. The .35 Remington has proven itself over and over through the years as a deer and bear caliber and will do wonders as a Moose round as well. Loaded with the new Hornady Leverloution rounds it's even better and reaches out further.
I have a friend in Maine that uses his .35 Remington with 150 grain bullets (336 Marlin in .35 Remington) as his go to coyote gun when he feels his H&R/NEF .22 Mag Sportster might not be enough, usually when he anticipates shots over 100 yards....<><.... :)

Just so there's no confusion there's no need for any changes other than swapping the extractor out as I stated yesterday, the lift button modification only applies to older ejector barrel conversions when changing from rimmed to rimless rounds, extractor barrels don't use lift buttons.  ;)
