Ruger 22/45 FTE
« on: July 25, 2012, 12:53:02 PM »
Horse traded for a MK lll Ruger 22/45. Gun is a couple of years old and when I shot it at the range I would get 2-3 FTE per mag. Had to dig the empty brass out and away from the live round that was trying to load and start again. Researched the problem and seems like it's pretty common. Most recommended fix was to buy and install a Volquartsen extractor. Most all said this cured the problem. Anyone here had this problem ?

That is what I was going to recommend. I had the same problem with a 10/22 and after installing the Volquartsen extractor and several thousand rounds later I can definitly say it fixed the problem.

GOOD SHOOTING!

while you've got it apart, remove the loaded chamber indicator- that makes FTE issues disappear also

I just acquired a 22/45 Lite and while I have only had two FTE's and both were with cheap Remington bullk ammo. I didn't even look at the first casing when I removed it, but the second was split. Other than the two FTE's I had no other issues with Remington ammo.
I also tried Winchester bulk, and the gun absolutely does not like this stuff. 2 to 3 jams per mag.
It seems that the 22/45 platform is a bit picky as to what you feed it.

I am going to the range today with 300 rounds of CCI mini mags to see how it likes them.

Can't really speak to the MKlll 22/45, but the two MKll 22/45s I own are not  ammunition sensitive. I did have to replace the extractor one of mine at a little over 12k rds. The other one continues to run with the stock extractor. The Volquartsen extractor is a great replacement for the stock one when the time comes. I did help a neighbor remove the magazine disconnect from his MKlll. HUGE improvement in trigger pull, and now the mag drops when the release button is pressed. If I owned a MKlll that would be the first thing I did to it.

My MK2 only did not like steel cases, such as the Russian and CCI Stinger cases. All others worked great after a fitting.

I've had no problems with my mkIII 22/45 when using CCI ammo.  But when I use cheap, bulk-pack, ammo I get a few FTF and FTE.  Sometimes a noticably weaker round will fire, cycle the action far enough to load the next round, but not reset the trigger.

I have found that a bunch of new ammo is not manufactured to the same exacting tolerances of years past. When I have an ammo that causes the problems cited I run some through my old Paco Kelly sizer and find some drops in and many, too many require varying levels of push in/out pressure to size the bullet to the proper dimensions. Old ammo was not like this! Of course, this does nothing for too light a charge to cycle the action, etc., but has made a lot of the FTE/FTF go away. I only do it to find out, or plink with something, otherwise just use what the gun likes (if you can get it).
