finally found a area gunclub that does leagues and stuff. I have never kept score but iv been told by people who do shoot trap alot that im a "natural" and have the potential to be quite good. I have been just shooting with my benelli m2 but would like to have something designated for trap. I see H&R has a single shot trap gun, anyone use one? I have shot friends BT's but right now it just is not in the budget. Would I be ok with starting off with the H&R? Trap doesnt do double birds, correct? I figured with my budget of $650 I can get the gun and pouch and a few cases of shells to start up?


Anything else? I have eye/ear protection

I started Trap with an old, used, Mossberg pump gun. For about $100 or so you can get a ribbed 30" FC barrel from Numrich Arms. The longer barrel is not 100% needed but it does help to smooth out the swing. So... For about half of your budget, you can have perfectly serviceable Trap gun and an extra barrel for hunting.
Be careful....Trap is addictive.

I've shot trap with pump guns, semiautos, O/Us and the Browning single barrel. I prefer to shoot with a pump tho. My very best scores came with a Winchester Model 12 trap gun followed by a Remington trap gun with monte carlo stock.

i like the rem. 870 traps too,but i realy like my brownings BT-100 and citori o/u. eastbank. ,

I started shooting trap with a used wards western field 16ga. pump that had a poly choke on it. It worked fine for sevearl years till I could afford a new gun.
It was replaced with a Ithica 37 feather weight 12ga. Finest shooting gun I have ever owned bar none. This was in 1970 and I still own it, bought a 20 ga for upland hunting and like it just as well.
For starting out I would find a nice used shot gun to use and if latter I still liked the sport UP grade to a new shot gun of your choice and maybe save some extra money to increase the buget a few hundred.
I also have Charles Dailys, SKB and Beartta's OU's in the safe. But still like the Itichas best.

I've shot skeet and Sporting Clays for years, and just got started in trap. I've been shooting my Browning 425s, without high rib or anything, and I'm shooting them well. However, you may want to consider a high rib barrel for your trap endeavors. Trap shooters tend to shoot tighter chokes as well. DOnt be suprised if you end up buying more expensive gins down the road though! I see guys shooting everything from 870 pumps to Kolars worth 25,000 +. Buy what you can afford and lots of shells with the rest.

find a gun that fits yu and stick with it.sum guys can shoot 25 out of 25 with a 100$ pump and sum guys shoot a spensive ou.my dad cud hit a flying flea at 50 yrds with his win model 97 but cant hit nuttin with my ou or any auto shotgun.
