just got a new upland gun.....
« on: July 26, 2012, 11:46:24 AM »
just picked up a BPS upland special. 20ga with 22" barrel. This gun feels so good and the actions as smooth as glass. This is the first browning iv owned and will be using it on a chukar/pheasant hunt in sept! Anyone else have one of these?

I don't have one of those, but the fit and finish of those that I've seen have been first rate.  That is a wonderful carrying piece.

Wish you well for your autumn hunt.

Son has one in a 16 and grandson has one in 12.  They both just love them and shoot them well.  Well made and reliable.

I had a Rem 870 with that barrel length. Great on grouse in the woods but I wasn't able to use it well in open country. I kept stopping the barrel. wonderful carrying gun though and one of the fastest pointing guns I ever used.

I've written extensively about how great the BPSs are, and why.  The configuration you've got, however, leaves a lot to be desired.  Barrels that short are obnoxiously loud for your hunting partners, dangerously so when waterfowl hunting.  They also have a shorter sight line and faster swing speed.  As a result, most everyone has the experience Don mentioned above.

Wild pheasants are remarkably tough, and except for the old, young, sick, and female, I can't really figure out why you'd want the 20.  It would be fine for doves.  Fine for early season waterfowl.  Fine for tame pheasants.  But when that big native rooster gets up wild at 35 yards and you get less than an ounce of shot at his tailfeathers as he's getting away, you'll be spending a lot of time wondering where he went when he hit the ground.

Fun gun, enjoy it, but don't be surprised if you end up with less birds than you would have liked.

Once you get 1 or 2 years of hunting under your belt you will find out how silly your post is.

the main purpose i purchased the gun for was grouse and rabbits. I will use it on a preserve chukar hunt also. No way will it be in the goose blind so that wont be a issue. I didnt buy it as a "all around" gun because I have many others to fill in where it wont be great.

Sounds perfect for what you intend to use it for.

Granted, longer barrels are easier to hit with when you're shooting longer ranges and out in the open. but I never could see the need for anything longer than 24" or so on a pump or auto for upland game.
After all, a S/S or O/U with 26" barrels has long been considered the classic upland gun and the overall length of your pump with 22" barrels is about the same.

Spruce is right! What your intended use is, it should be perfect. I also bought a new upland gun a Browning Citori u/o in 16 ga. Others have told me what a mistake it was.  It's a pound and a half and several inches shorter than my Browning 12 ga. o/u Sporting Clay's gun, and lighter and shorter than my 870 Wingmaster 16 ga. Tomorrow I will post my last score for my clay's league, with my 12 ga, then I will have 3 more weeks to shoot clays with the new 16 ga. I'm excited. Crow season is open and I have been using it for that. I can't wait for pheasant season! It's going to be great fun. You made a good choice. By the way you don't use a 9/16 wrench on a 1/2 inch nut. Right tool for the job. Have fun and Enjoy!

I have one of the Upland special's in 16 gauge with a 24'' barrel. Great shotguns imo and since I shoot left hand I really appreciate how the safety is easy to get to.

Before I got it I used an Ithaca model 37 20 gauge with a LH safety for everything. Thank God the pheasants  and a couple of turkeys had failed to read about how they were immune to a 20 gauge.  :o

My son shoots one 16 ga. and grandson has one 12.  They both like them very much and see lot of use.  Granson is a lefty so it really works well for him.

used mine for the first time saturday. Chukars in the woods and pheasants in the tall grass. Flushed the one chukar at about 15 yards and dusted it. When we went after the pheasants had a hen pop up at about 7 yards and let her have it. Glad i had installed the improved cylinder! Really liking this gun so far.....may possibly add the 12ga and 16ga to the collection!

have a 20ga bps and really enjoy it. mine has the 26" barrel though. carries nice and shoots great. haven't tried any tough pheasants with mine but have shot raccoons, skunks, and a 100lb bear so far. i like the 20ga-powerful and versatile.
every day is a gift. use it well

just picked up a BPS upland special. 20ga with 22" barrel. This gun feels so good and the actions as smooth as glass. This is the first browning iv owned and will be using it on a chukar/pheasant hunt in sept! Anyone else have one of these?

Congrats on your 'FIND!'  Hope it serves you well.

I don't own any Browning shotguns, and am disappointed the BPS-design isn't more popular.  If I was a still a killer of waterfowl, would have invested long ago in a 10ga BPS!

However, with that 20gagger Upland Special, I would really recommend that you pick up an extra 26 or 28inch barrel when you get the chance.  Just to have as well as to give more options and versatility.

This is what I did when I bought my M870 20ga Youth Combo (have 3 bbls for it;  20in rifled slug bbl, 21inch vented RemChoke and 26inch vented RemChoke!  Actually I also have a 4th bbl, a shortened cylinder non-VR barrel when the gun is set up for sentry duty.  ;)    I also replaced the youth stock with an adult length-stock too).

If I had a Browning BPS, would also pick up an extra (pistol grip) stock too, as I hate straight stocks.

As a reloader I love that the BPS dumps 'em at your feet.  :)
Hope you bag many quails, qrouses, feeazzants, and chuckers!!   8)    Nice goin' on your first hunt with it!
