Help me decide!
« on: July 27, 2012, 12:03:06 AM »
Hi All,

I dropped out of the Handi Arms race (499 Hubel & 50-140) because I don't like lead sleds and a 45-120 off the bench is enough for me.  Got rid of my extra BC barrels before I shipped them to JES. :'(

Well ya gotta have a project going according to the Handiholic Bylaws so I think I am going after the 9.3x74R.

Now here is the problem I need help with:

NIB Ultra Hunter 25-06 gun (lam. stock set & 26" barrel a must have) for the conversion is $325 out the door

JES conversions with freight etc. is about $350

so I have a $675 Handi w/o optics or sights?!?!

NIB Ruger #1 sporty in 9.3x74R with open sights is less than $800! :o

I would do a stub or liner but .366 take off barrels or blanks don't seem readily available.

Comments Please!

Well Bikerbeans, I'm sorry to hear that you got out at one time.  I almost did after my injury (and everything hurt me to shoot) but I never parted with all of them.  Yeah, I can see if you got too carrieed away, that recoil at the bench could be a very disillusioning thing.  I certainly didn't like level three loads in my 45-70!  But wow, that actually would be a hard choice!  There is an allure to a #1!  Of course I would think if you were going to do your project, a #3 would be the natural choice if you went Ruger.  After all, it seems you really like to be different and anyone can have a #1.  So that really would add to the price of the project and makes the Handi the obvious choice!  See how easy that decision was!  You're welcome.  44 Man

You should be able to make a profino barrel to insert in your 16 gauge, its a rimmed cartridge so you know you wont have any problems with it.  ;D ;D ;D

I know it's apostasy, but a Ruger No1 in 9.3x74 is exceptionally cool and at $762 from Buds with free shipping, it's very hard to say "no". The wood on the four No 1 that I have seen has been pretty good too.

Have Jesse bore and rifle a .30 cal take off barrel for the stub, then there's no question on the clean up of the 25-06 chamber!  ;) For this Handiholic having a Ruger #1 or anything other than a Handi in a custom chambering just doesn't cut it.  :-\ Before I bought and sold the 375H&H Encore long ago, I handled a Ruger #1 375H&H, didn't care for it in the least, just not for me, didn't care for the Encore either, sold the frame and stock, traded the barrel for a 35 Whelen Handi.   8)

I have never owned a Ruger #1, but sure would like to have one. I think they are the pinnacle of single shot rifles. There would be no question in my mind that the Ruger is the way to go. You are only talking $125 difference. Most times when I went the cheap route, I kick myself later for not just spending the money up front and get what I want. The only thing that would hold me back is the weight. Like I said, never owned a Ruger #1, but if I recall, they are fairly heavy, so if you were to be a carrying this gun in the mountains, I would opt for the Handi, simply because I think it should be lighter. Chop off 4" on the barrel, would lighten it up some more with plastic stock/fore arm. Of course it is personal choice, it always is, mine would be the Ruger, unless I was going on a hunting trip where I was going to be toting it around a lot, then weight would be King.

I may get banned from Handi Heaven for this, but I think the #1 would be the better investment :(

Both the H&R Handi synthetic and the Ruger #1 Light Sporter in 30-06 are listed at 7.0 lbs even.  I love the versatility of the H&R centerfire rifles, especially with the shotgun and .22 barrel options (if you can find one), but when it comes to built quality the Ruger wins hands down.  That said, the Rugers have gone way up in price since I got mine in the 90's.  Bud's now lists the light sporter at $920 (MSRP $1299)!  ::)

I have a few Handis and I like them a lot. They are a great value, they are solid, dependable, and a lot of fun. That said I also have a #1 and I can tell you there is no comparison between the two.
The #1 was always intended to be Bill Ruger's pride and joy. It has never fallen short in that regard. I might stop short of saying that everyone should OWN a #1 but I think everyone should have the chance to shoot one at least once.
I think if I ever fell on hard times my #1 would be one of the last to go.

Just my opinion I'm an old man and what I see coming on the horizon I'm buying lots of ammo and large capacity magazines. I love my Handi's and bolts but if the world don't change give me a AR in both hands.

If you like big bores, you could do what I did for my brother.  He wanted heap big defensive bear medicene for 50 yards max.

So, I found a rifled 20 gauge (Ultra Slug Hunter, I think) here and put it on an SB 2 frame.  Then we started working up loads with round ball and Mag-Tec all brass shells.

After quite a bit of experimentation, we ended up with three 392 grain balls in one cartridge, about 1050 to 1100 fps.  Lovely inch and a half triangles at 25 yards, three inch at 50.  He can't stop grinning when he shoots it.

The round is crimped on the equator of the top ball.  Looks very much like a 600 Nitro.  The bore is .626 and he hardens the balls when he casts them.

Does have a bit of recoil, though due to the low fps it's not really as bad as most think.  :)

The Ruger #1 may actually be lighter than a Handi 25-06 Ultra Handi with a 26" barrel. Hmmm, maybe a 460 S&W Magnum is in my future.

Guess I ought to look at chamber drawings before going off on build/tangent. :-[   I think I was blinded by the 26" barrel length.  ;D    I don't think a 243W,308W, 06' or 270W will work.  It looks like the 30-30  (I know, if I rebore a 30-30 I go to HandiHe!! ::) ), 357Mag, 35 Rem or any of the 22 cal CF Handis will work.  There is a under appreciated/under used standard contour 22-250 with a factory fit barrel/frame in my safe that needs a job or a new home.    Hmmmmmhhh, something to think about and it does lower the build cost because I got if for real cheap a couple of year ago.

I have never even picked a RUger #1 up, so maybe I need to handle/shoot one first before making a decision?!??

Decisions, decisions.

Its still a good deal at $50 more. Over the course of the rest of your life, $50 is nothing.
You will keep the #1 forever; think of it more as a marriage than investment.

I had a handi and enjoyed using it, longed for a #1.
Wife said buy it and use it, rather than wanting it forever and getting it when your are too old to enjoy it.
I obeyed her, twice. 1-V 22-250, 1-RSI 30-06. Let the handi move on to someone who would use it.

Most of my gun ownership enjoyment is off-season fondling, just because its nine months of the year.
Most of my hunting time is spent sitting with the gun in my lap.
Sure is nice having a #1 in my lap.
Shoots good, too.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I would love to follow your advice my friend but apparently there is a 3rd option that I had overlooked.  My 14 year old daugher (honor roll student in Jr. High) is starting high school next month and wants to go to Sylvan Learning Center to help her get all "A"s on her report card.  I can live w/o the 9.3x74R and a few other things to fulfill her request. :)
