Conversations with Liberals

Although we live in the vicinity of the buckle of the Bible Belt, are rural rather than urban, and are generally a conservative region, there are several Liberalis democratii that are fellow church members.  The main topic of conversation for this week has been the shooting in Colorado.  One man said, "They ought to pass a law that somebody can't have that much ammo."  When I asked "Why, how, and what good would that do?", he sputtered for a few minutes and walked off. 
Another person said, "Somebody like that  Holmes guy shouldn't be allowed to have guns."  I asked her, "What kind of law would you have to pass in order to prevent it, and do you think he would have obeyed the law?"  She never could come up with an answer...this is the person who once said, "I think that only the police and the military should have guns, and then only when they're on duty."  She is also the person who, now that she is a widow, obtained a pistol from a family member, got me to teach her how to shoot it, and keeps it in a nightstand.   
 
Guy #1 then came back and said, "Anybody who buys a gun ought to have to pass a background check."  I reminded him that anyone who buys from a dealer already has to pass one, and Holmes apparently would have passed one (did pass?). 
 
Is it an absolute requirement that liberals divest themselves of common sense?

After hearing the statement highlighted in bold I would have refused to teach her to shoot the pistol...you know... to help her to remain true to her beliefs and convictions. I guess she should have rephrased that statement to read "Only police, military and of course me should be allowed to have guns"

My pastor is a conservative, and yet made some similarly stupid comments.
 
The same old - "no one needs high capacity autos for target or hunting, so they shouldn't be legal to own them".
 
I tried to remind him that the second amendment is not about putting holes in four footed beasts; it's about putting holes in two footed beasts, that shoot back.

Over the years I've found two things that turn anti-gun people around:

1.  Introducing them to shooting, showing them how much fun it is and how nice most shooters are.

2.  Their being threatened by riots or criminal violence.  After the  Rodney King riots in 1992,  people with whom I had argued tirelessly  over gun ownership suddenly saw the light. 

Sad but true.  Few people actually respond to reason. They do respond to fear and to pleasure.

lakota: I understand your frustration, but I never pass up an opportunity to try to make a convert. I didn't even remind her of her previous statement.  Her newest one is, "I'll never be able to shoot anyone with it, but I feel better having it to use to scare them off with."

reliquary:  sorry buddy, but there is no such thing as a conversation with a liberal.  They talk at you on accounta we are too stupid to discuss things with them and we have to be 'told'.
Lakota:  I agree that we should have helped her stay true to her beliefs.  While I also agree that liberals who get mugged by a member of the oppressed minority often turn conservative I don't think you can ever really teach them how to shoot.  You can teach them how to fire a gun but to shoot in their own defense - ?  I dunno.  It's sort of like:  do I shoot this charging grizzly bear or is it simply a mother bear defending her cub (and by that time it's too late.....).
And for the person who thinks only police and military should have guns, and only when they are on duty - who has them when they are off duty??  Just a thought....

When "seconds" count, remember. The police are only "minutes" away. AND. There is not one single "atheist" in Hell today.
My point?
You can tell'em until your face turns blue. Until reality hits them, they seldom convert to belief, concerning "either topic". I don't even discuss with either anymore. I give them the facts, and if they reject, and switch to debate mode? I walk away.

 They have one portly old ex alcoholic Democrat on it. Every time I listen to Bob I get an education on  just how much twisted logic they use to come up with support or defense of their "take" is  on anyhing . Marvelous and bizarre at the same time. I wonder if they are actually born on this planet.

I know what you mean about "Bob".  What a slob!

In a discussion about the Chick-Fil -A controversy, he said he would rather rent a building to the communist party than to Chick-Fil A because of it's anti-sodomite stance on marriage.   

Liberals are evil.  I have always believed this, ever since the 1960's when they were so in love with the torturers and murderers who ran the Soviet Union.
