Although we live in the vicinity of the buckle of the Bible Belt, are rural rather than urban, and are generally a conservative region, there are several
Liberalis democratii that are fellow church members. The main topic of conversation for this week has been the shooting in Colorado. One man said, "They ought to pass a law that somebody can't have that much ammo." When I asked "Why, how, and what good would that do?", he sputtered for a few minutes and walked off.
Another person said, "Somebody like that Holmes guy shouldn't be allowed to have guns." I asked her, "What kind of law would you have to pass in order to prevent it, and do you think he would have obeyed the law?" She never could come up with an answer...this is the person who once said, "I think that only the police and the military should have guns, and then only when they're on duty." She is also the person who, now that she is a widow, obtained a pistol from a family member, got me to teach her how to shoot it, and keeps it in a nightstand.
Guy #1 then came back and said, "Anybody who buys a gun ought to have to pass a background check." I reminded him that anyone who buys from a dealer already has to pass one, and Holmes apparently would have passed one (did pass?).
Is it an absolute requirement that liberals divest themselves of common sense?
