(range report) 76 model 58 cal huntsman load problems

took my huntsman out using a round ball and patch, started with 70 grains of pyrodex, 2 .5 ft low at 100, worked my way up to 110 still 2 ft low with the sight elevator in uppermost notch any suggestions? different powder projectile combos maybe

Maybe your front sight is too tall?   What is your POI at 25 yards and 50 yards? 
 
I don't know if you sights are attached with screws or brazed or dovetailed.   IF screws or dovetail you can probably buy a shorter front sight from Brownells or H&R or Numrich.  If brazed probably gotta live with what you got.
 
I have had this issue with the blade type front sight on several Handis and I just file down the front sight, very slowly while at the range, an check this "adjustment" by shooting the gun.  When I get the height I want I dress up my "handi-work" by using a black touch up pen.  I also file a small notch on the top/back of the front sight and put a drop of orange paint there for a Profino fire sight. ;D

it is brazed on,  would a higher elevator for the rear sight do the same thing?

Yes, if you raise the rear sight you raise the POI.

If the front sight is brazed on, it is not the factory original.  The front sights were dovetailed on the rifle barrels.  However, I have an unused Lyman 16 series that is higher than the original if you are interested. Send me a PM with your address and I will send it to you at no cost.

Wileynet 1st time I read your post I took it as you moved up to 110 yards. 110gr of powder is a VERY stout load? :o  Kurt

110gr isn't a particularly stout load in the .58, the Lyman BP Handbook lists BP from 50gr to 190gr under a RB, a mid level load of 110gr runs ~4500-6900LUP (lead units pressure) depending on the barrel length, for comparison Hodgdon lists some 12ga 2¾" shotgun loads in LUP up to 7500LUP, the SAAMI MAP for the 12ga is 11500PSI. Lyman does state specifically they recommend a max load of 100gr 2F for the .58 Huntsman with a 505gr minie, so 110gr under a RB that weighs about half that shouldn't be a problem.  ;)

I forgot he was using RB .I know mine shootin 500 minnies and 90gr of FF has a pretty good pop. Kurt
