Barrel Threading for Choke Tubes

Is this something that can be done DIY or does it have to be done by a professional? Can you rent or buy the tool? Has anyone done this before? I'd like to thread a/some shotgun barrels. Thanks

It's easier if you use one of these tube adapters:

You just turn down the last 3/4" of the barrel and solder it in place. It accepts Win-Chokes

Site sponsor 4D rentals has the reamer and tap available . It can be done by hand with a Brace & Bit , cutting oil, and some elbow grease. Check the O.D. of the barrel and choose which size choke tube will work the best.I have done several and its not that hard to do and really makes your shotgun more "Handi"

Thanks Jeep, I read down a little after Tim moved this to here. I forgot about this section. I have a Handi short 12 and a 20 I'd like to shorten and tube. Always wanted to do some 410s but is probably not as easy   I have several Browning tubes but could buy some Rems

The adapater is 2.5" long so if someone cut a shotgun barrel down to +15.5" and got the adapter soldered in place immediately the barrel would be legal since it is finished at +18" w/o the choke tube installed?

All I know is that I installed one a few years ago using silver solder ( the soft stuff). It's handled everything I put through it; this includes my famous "Put the bigest slug you can find through a rifled choke tube" experiment. It held just fine...........my right hand had checkering from the torque when the slug hit the rifled section.
 A second one held up to a dumb-ass mistake; I installed the choke tube without lube, took it hunting and then tried to remove it.......it withstood a choke wrench with an 18" cheater on it.

The nice thing about these is that the choke is "beyond the barrel" so to speak; if it should bulge for some reason, the barrel will not be hurt.

It can't be any worst than my friend who shoots steel BBB goose loads through a XXX extended turkey choke with his 1187.   About 10 years ago he showed up for opening morning of the early goose season and his son jumped him for leaving the turkey choke on his gun.  He said he would shoot it anyway so we let him hunt, but in a blind by himself.    He shot a couple of birds and said he likes his gun with this choke and he has been shooting steel through it ever year since.  I asked him if I could measure the ID of his choke tube but he wouldn't let me near it.   Me thinks his turkey pattern may  not be as dense as it once was.

You can also buy a choke threader from brownells for about $85 bucks which is almost the same as renting one, but would allow you to do more at another time as needed too.    I guess you do need to buy the correct gauge blade and a nut, so total expenditure might be closer to $130 for the first gauge, then only $50 to add each one.  I'm considering one in 20 ga. for some projects.
