Grape eating possum...
« on: July 30, 2012, 11:31:58 PM »
Have some nice grapes this year...

Unfortunately, the other day I found this bunch ~1/4 gone as I was about to harvest it. Last night I caught a possum on his tippy-toes, eating as many as he could reach.

I went up to him and asked what the heck was going on. No response, so I whacked him with a broom and he walked away. I guess that beating wasn't very effective because next morning, about 3/4 of the bunch were gone.

What variety are those grapes?

In this area we have a wild grape, mostly seed & skin, that's called variously "possum grapes", "fox grapes", etc.  Maybe your visitor was just confused?

:)  Howdy! Catch him in a live trap and re-locate him at least 5 miles away, as the crow flies. Or, see if any of your neighbors might want to roast and eat a grape-fed possum for Sunday dinner. Always, Gene

Ya gotta hit those grinner's a lot harder than that if you want them not to come back. I would recommend a .22 to the back of the head...
I used to have one that would come by every night while I was bow hunting in a particular stand. I would drop an apple core and watch him eat his dinner.... One night I forgot to bring an apple and he wondered around my stand for a long time looking...

I don't remember what it is; I planted it ~10 years ago. Makes nice seedless grapes though.

Maybe I should put up a sign.... "For human consumption only!"

I've "relocated" them to possum heaven in the past, but they've always reincarnated.  :-\
