17 HMR or 22 WMR???
« on: July 31, 2012, 08:11:40 AM »
I want a mag sportster but I don't know which one. I would like comments on performance, accuracy, range. Which would be your preferences for critters up to
'yotes out to150 yds? I have a handi in 243 that i love for larger critters. Also, which is the loudest? Thanks for your time and input.

Not going to be much help here, but I say get 'em both! That is what I plan on doing, well eventually. I have the .17 hmr and it shoots well. Mine actually shoots the 20 gr better than the 17 gr ones. Have not hunted with it yet, so don't have anything to tell on that matter.

i personally  dont like the idea of either  for yotes  out that far?   ive owned both  calibers  each  are  pretty much equal, in IMO. the 17 is fast and accurate  for  sure , ammo cost ? real close , so  u might as well get both  and decide! i killed alot of  groundpiggies  with  both calibers, sound wise???the 22mag maybe  louder? to close for me to tell

the 17 in most cases are more accurate and shoots flater , note thar CCI makes all the ammo no matter the color tip on the bullet  ;) The 22 has mo energy down range on longer shots or seems to hit harder . If you compare it most likely does better in a breeze. A yote at 150 yards is alot for either I would think.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I guess I'm not allot of help either... I agree with EVERY POST SO FAR!!

I have both too,  ;D

I do like the 22Mag for coyotes and have shot a couple with the HMR too. None anywhere near 150 yards... Not that it will not work, its just quite a "poke"... If I was forced to choose one, I would have to go with the 22 Mag because coyotes are on the menu. If only the smaller varmints I would likely choose the 17 as its flatter and generally more accurate.

Good luck,
 CW

Neither one is a 150 yard coyote cartridge.

I've owned both (no not in a handi rifle) but now only own .22 magnum. If the goal was small targets like PDs out there at 150 I'd prolly say go with the .17 but for most all other uses I personally prefer the .22 magnum.

I like my Ultra Varmint in 22M. As said, quite a choice in loads. Accuracy is not 22 LR match performance, but a miss at distance on small varmints will likely be a a miss rather than a wounding shot. FWIW, the 22M is more cartridge than the old 22WCF (the real parent of the 22Hornet before they hyper-velo'ed it) and it was considered quite a small bore express. I have to admit, though, that is very dated information for todays crowd. My Hornets (3) are gone now but the little maggie is still here; grab & go (wears a 6x). I have more faith in bullet weight with some velo than 'energy figures' with light fast bullets with dramatic wind drift. I am better at Tennessee Elevation than Kentucky Windage.

The range your talking about for Coyotes is .223 range, leave the rim fires at home.  I carry a .17 HMR for Red Fox, a .223 will blow them apart at close range.

I hunt yotes with a 22 mag and 75 yards is about as far as I will shoot at them . Most I kill inside 50 yards . I have had the best luck killing yotes with the Fed 50 gr HP and good luck with the Win 45 gr HP. I have found CCI ammo to be inconsistent and stopped buying it in the mid 80's . I might hold a grudge a little too long. My 22mag is my go to gun and I have several nice Centerfires. If your not sure I would go with a 22 mag .

I have owned both the 17HMR and the 22 Mag, both in Savage rifles. I found they are both very accurate, but 100 yards is my max I would shoot a coyote with either of them. I sold my 17HMR and kept the 22 Mag, as I like the fact the heavier bullet buffers the wind better then the smaller 17 cal bullet. Also like the extra weight of the 22 Mag bullets. I shoot the CCI 40 gr. bullets and the Remington 40 gr. bullets. Both hit the same point of aim out to 100 yards in my Savage. If I am going to go past 100 yards, I will either grab my .223 or 243 for coyotes. Also make sure you have good glass on your gun, I have a Leupold 4X12X40 on my Savage 22 Mag
