State Forests near Buffalo?
« on: July 31, 2012, 01:34:19 PM »
Hi all

I'm interested in trying deer in a rifle county within a reasonable drive from Buffalo. I see there are several State Forests nearby. Lost Nations,Cold Creek and Carlton Hill to name a few. Has anyone have an opinion on these or others nearby? I usually hunt north of the town of Alabama but want to try a rifle area. Thank you.

If you go to the DEC website dec.ny.gov and enter WMA in the search engine you'll find a list of all the Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in the state listed by county.   If you enter "state forests" you'll get a listing by region.  You want Region 9.

I hope this helps.

I should have added this:

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/35010.html

It details where what implements are legal.  It is not near where you are hunting but add Cayuga county to the list of rifle counties.  The governor signed the bill two weeks ago and it is effective this year.

I grew up 5 min from carlton hill and still live not far from there.  There is alot of game there but,  come hunting season there are even more hunters.  This is not to say you cant take a deer it just usually means taking the road less travled and travleing deep into the woods.

I was there yesterday(opening day). I was at the end of the dead end gravel road off Bank St.. Were many trucks but once away from parking area it was pretty secluded. Many helpful people to talk to also.

Jim;   In northern Catt county.
Try Bush Hill Forest, just off route 98 near Farmersville Center...or Bear Creek Forest,  On Bera Creek rd. just off  route 16 about a mile north of Franklinville.
