View slideshows       SEATTLE (AP) — Mysterious crop circles have appeared in an eastern Washington wheat field — not far from the nation's largest hydropower producer — but area farmers preparing for the summer's harvest find the distraction more amusing than alarming.
"You can't do anything other than laugh about it," said Cindy Geib, who owns the field along with her husband, Greg. "You just kind of roll with the theory it's aliens and you're special because aliens chose your spot."
Friends called the Geibs on July 24 when the pattern of flattened wheat was spotted off Highway 174, about five miles north of the town of Wilbur. The field is about 10 miles south of the Grand Coulee dam, which the Bureau of Reclamation says is the largest hydropower producer in the United States.
The circles resemble a four-leaf clover and remind Cindy Geib of Mickey Mouse ears. The design knocked down about an acre of their wheat. Some of it could be salvaged by combines when the harvest starts in a week or two, she said, but some will be lost.
"Of course, we don't have alien insurance," she said.
Crop circles have been a worldwide phenomenon for decades, and this is not the first one in Lincoln County. Similar circular patterns were left in crops in the Wilbur area in 2010 and in 2008 or 2009, Geib said.
Lynne Brougher, public affairs officer for the Grand Coulee dam, hadn't heard about the latest crop circles but said the previous one was no cause for alarm.
"It seemed to be highly unusual," Brougher said. "As I recall from a couple of years ago, there was no good explanation of how they got there."
Still, she added, "it wasn't a concern."
The latest crop circle was first reported Tuesday by Spokane station KHQ-TV (http://is.gd/57FTpy ). There were no signs that anyone walked into the field.
"We're trying to figure out how they got out there without breaking any of the wheat. It's hard to walk through the crunchy wheat and not knock it down," Geib said. "At the same time, it's hard to think it's aliens. It's a bizarre thing to wrap your brain around."
Geib's daughter-in-law, Kelly Geib of Wilbur, says the crop circle has given the family something to ponder and chuckle about.
"The kids all like to say the aliens have come, and we're happy to indulge them," she said.

:)  Howdy! I've always found crop circles interesting. Some believe that they are man made only. Someone once said that crop circles might be made by some kind of atmospheric phenomena that we have not discovered yet. They seem to have such geometric precision that it makes you think that something other than human hands made them. Always, Gene

The fancy ones are amazing. I've read quite a bit about them and can't see how some of them could possibly be made by guys with boards strapped to their feet, in one night.

I'm pretty sure they're being done from satellite or aircraft, using a laser or some such directed energy thingie. Viewed from above, they look exactly like the result of CAD drawings and laser engravings on a grand scale. The nodes on the plants where they bend show evidence of being heated.

Why anyone would go to the trouble and expense is beyond me.

How many people could there be that would consider the crop circles to be anything BUT man made? That actual number is probably real scarey and part of the explination of why the world is in the shape that it is in today. ear

Unless you can say, "I know positively how this is done!" your opinion is no better than anyone elses. Remember, there was a time not all  that long ago that the majority swore the world was flat and that man could never fly. Guess the "know it alls" were wrong. ;) The moral being never say never. :)  That's all too often the problem with science. They assume they know the facts so no need to look any farther. Something is impossible, by our understanding, so therefore it must truly be impossible. As often as that concept has been proven wrong you'd think folks would learn.

I'd sure like to know how they do it. It's said that many of them have no evidence of anyone disturbing the surrounding area. Beautiful work regardless...

I believe there is life out there on billions of planets. I also believe if I wanted to talk to them and had just rode a gazillion, billion miles I'd just walk up and say hi. I would not find it benificial to tear up their wheat with pretty marks, might piss them off.
Although I know I am right I'll just lay low.

inserting the lowest numbers possible, the Drake equation show a possible 182 million planetary bodies in our solar system that could harbor some form of life... the real problem is  the distance, not all or even any of them could make the trip to us on any reasonable time schedule.  even at if they had wormhole capabilities, it would most likely be a one way trip .
alien life ? yes, 100%.  little green men in saucers zipping around ? not to likely

182 million planetary bodies in our solar system--really?  Does that count Pluto, because the last I heard, some scientists aren't sure it is big enough to count as a planet.  Let's see, there's Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and uh, uh, youranus ....
