A Most Excellent Article on using one rifle
« on: August 05, 2012, 01:11:03 AM »
I'd be a little concerned about using a .30-06 on large bears but there's some excellent advise here.

This thought had gone thru my mind way before I ever read this article. If I traveled and hunted many places what would be the one rifle I would depend on and the old, reliable 30-06 was the one I picked. Nothing fancy, but just a meat and potatoes caliber that will get it done.

Compelling article. thanks for sharing. 1959?

Wide variety of 30 cal bullets makes the 30-06 a versatile choice.
I have an accurate 180 gr load for my 30-06, but I also have a reduced load for 125 gr bullets that follows the same trajectory for about 150 yards for when the field is short. Sold my 30-30 and 270, so I am almost a one rifle guy (have a 22-250 similar to my 30-06.)

Is it just me or does it seem strange that one has to go back 50 odd years to find decent articles?

Of course 1959 means that some cartridges were still to come down the road like the short magnums of the 1960's.

30-06? Whaaat? Can't do it with a 30-30 as one rifle? I do. Well... in the deer woods, I do, expect during ML season... .
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

For someone who wasn't a writer he did pretty good.  He was a great writer and an excellent hunter.

No way id ever want to have only one rifle. Most guys who go with that theroy are guys that there wives wont let them buy guns. So in there defense they try to claim that because they only hunt and shoot one guy there a bit better with it. I shoot many many differnt guns. I hunt with handguns and rifles and seldom use the same gun for more then one year and when doing crop damage shooting im known to sometimes switch rifles every day! . A guy that shoots alot learns trigger control and a guy that shoots alot learns how to shoot. If i had only one rifle id have to rebarrel the thing every year! But if push came to shove and i could only have one big game gun it would no doubt be an 06.

No way will I be happy with one rifle.  I shot my first mule deer with a Win Mdl 70 270 in 1953.  For some time I used the 270 for mule deer and pronghorn shooting. But for elk the 340 Weatherby is what I ended up using. For a while I used a 308 Norma Mag for mule deer, pronghorn, and elk shooting. For prairie dog shooting I started out with a 22 LR in 1949 followed by a 222 Rem. But over the years for varmints and preditors I have also used a 17 HM2, 17 HMR, 17 Fireball, 17 Rem, 204 Ruger, 22WMR, 22 Hornet, 221 Fireball, 223 Rem, 22-250 Rem, and 243 Win.Varity is the spice of life. I have two 30-06s rifle but never got around to use them for hunting. The 06 is a fine round and have seen big game shot with it.  I still have to try out a 17 Hornady Hornet , I ll get on for my next birthday, 77 th year, but if I cant get one by then hope to have one by Christmas.

As I get older I realize material possesions are a prison.  I hope to get down to one rifle.  I keep selling off what I don't need.  I only need my .30-06.  If I didn't have a wife I'd live in a 10"X14" shed or maybe a camper shell.

Swampman_   Everyone is different , as I get up in age I look at my hunting , fishing, and camping equipment and it helps me remember of all the good times Iv had using it and some of the good people I have goin with.  Over the years I would read about favorite cartridges and brands of firearms so I would give it a try. End up also taking deer with a 22-250 Rem, 243 Win, 257 Roberts, 25-06 Rem, 264 Win Mag. I also got a 7 MM Rem , 30-30, 308 Win, 300 Savage, and like the 30-06 never used for hunting, but they are all good hunting rounds. I have enjoyed working up reloaded for all of them and some of the rifles require me to give them a tune up to get small groups. I still have the fly that help me to catch the biggest trout for the year up in Worland Wyo. sporting goods store.
