mixed shot sizes?
« on: August 05, 2012, 07:41:24 AM »
I load for rifle, but not shotgun; answer to this might get me interested in trying it:
Around here, the coyote and crow buffet is open year round.
It would be nice to be able to load my 12 ga 3.5" shotgun with shells to cover both.

Is is feasible to mix shot sizes in a single hull to cover dual purposes?
Maybe 2/3 of #4 or #6 birdshot and 1/3 of #4 buckshot.
Anybody tried loading something like this or hunting with it?

Can you do it yes. Should you? No not in my opinion.

Rather than giving you ad advantage of any sort it will put you at a disadvantage on all shots.

Just take both type loads with you and swap them out if you need the other. Remington has marketed some ammo with two shot sizes tho not nearly as drastically different in size as you propose. It was just a marketing gimmick and never caught on.

When the duplex loads were new I read something you might want to think about. It was said that a layer of small shot over large shot (or vice-verso) is OK, but mixing shot is not. I think the main reason was that the small shot fills in the voids between the larger shot so the same volume of weighs more and increases pressure. Also, I think the shot charge is not as able to "squish down" as much like buffered loads which also increases pressure. Thirdly, I've read that one should never experiment around with shot shell loads without a pressure barrel because sometimes what seems like a small change from a given load with measured pressure data results in a large pressure increase.

I have hunted with duplex loads and like them. I used factory loads from Remington in #2 and #6 shot mixed and BB amd 4's . They were death on turkeys and crows . I would tend to stick with fine shot up to T's or F's mixed with smaller shot. I have also mixed 71/2 and 9's and they killed doves as well as anything I have used other than peigon loads . But pattern your gun or you might be shooting doughnut patterns .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I see your problem but the the mix and match doesn`t seem like the answer. To me anyway.

If you do combine shot sizes keep them separate with the smaller shot on the bottom. Big shot on the bottom will produce blown patterns.
