for a first timer there what would be a good area. any thing specal one should know
No particular area to speak of… All of JPG north of the firing line is rather scrubby, brushy with random mature woods and the occasional creek. The northern areas consist of mature native oak – hence the name. As a side note the photos of the deer you will see in bldg. 125 are mostly chance encounters. JPG is over 50,000 acres and the hunt areas are mostly around the perimeter. As for travel time, from bldg. 125 to the Old Timbers Lake it’s about ˝ hour drive.
Bring your lunch, water and T.P. as it will be an all day adventure. Also, a mandatory compass – a newer requirement as people are always getting lost up there. Cell phones/GPS may be spotty. The terrain is relatively flat and after a while all it may all start looking the same – especially if one is concentrating on tracking wounded deer.
My policy for JPG has always been “First come – First served” I always take the first decent (weight wise) doe or buck.
