Finding a "K" tank for BBM
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:21:51 AM »
I just called a company that tests and rejects tanks, asking for a "K" tank, the guy asked pointed questions about the end use, and when I was honest he said they wouldn't sell me one! Said if I wanted one for a bell maybe. I don't believe in lying for any reason , so I don't know what to do next. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

Sometimes absolute honesty is not the best policy; tell them you are looking for some for wind chimes.  It would probably be a good idea to take several of differing sizes to reinforce this idea.

I know that bronze coehorns ring like a bell when shot, well at any rate they ring.  Do BB mortars ring when fired?

I haven't noticed it but mine is mounted like an M1861 mortar with side trunnions which would damp any ringing.

Do you need a "straw purchaser" to buy scrap steel tanks?

I need a straw purchaser now, I can't get imaginative with the truth now and be believed. I'll pay $100 plus whatever they want for two tanks. I drive scrap copper from our primary products up to Portland every two weeks, and could pick one up then. Please PM me if you can help. The advantage of the tanks is weight, they are relatively light and designed for pressure.

In my business time is money, and paring down shelby or whatever else I can make a tube out of, so that it's light enough, will take lots of time.

It seems to me that the K cylinder is the best compromise for me.

Another source might be a scrap yard where the condemned tanks get sent.  I have seen some locally when I've dropped off stuff.  Let them know what you are looking for & leave a number.
