Help!!!
« on: August 06, 2012, 05:01:57 PM »
My name is Robert Smith, and I am rapidly becoming a "Handi-holic".

Okay.  Got .223 bull barrel and .30-30.

Now...

If you could only have one other Handi what would you have?

Depends on where you live.  Back East the 45-70.  Out West the 30-06.

In the last couple of years I have bought about 2 dozen "only one more" Handis. IF you have been bitten by the bug just buy the next one you can get a good deal on because there will be more to come.  ;D

It depends on what you want it for. For Deer a big Bore out East, like a 45-70, 444, 44 Mag out West a 308, 7-08, 30-06. If you are just going to have fun with it, I suggest a small bore like a 243, 25-06 or a 357 Mag. The obvious choice is a 223, but you already have one.

I would recomend a 357 mag.  44 mag. or a 45 colt, for plinking, target or hunting.

My vote is for the 22 Hornet - I know you already have a .223, but the Hornet is a lot of fun to plink with - especially if you are a handloader.  If you are,  I wold suggest reaming it out to 22K Hornet like I just did - Quiet, no recoil, very economical to reload and just plain fun!

45-70 and buy a casting pot...mild to wild in one cartridge.

Then, when wild doesn't seem quite so wild anymore, 45-120 it!

Looks like the universal recommendation is the venerable old 45/70.  Can't beat it.  Like tykempster said, "Mild to Wild in one cartridge".

It's devastating on Black Bears over bait.  Hogs may run, but they don't go far.   Does a good job on Moose too.   Back it down a little and it's great for Whitetail.  Big hole in and a big hole out.  Little bullet expansion, unless a bone is hit.  Little hermrage, if any, due to the slower speed, and nice big holes to let the blood out.

Well, while waiting on the 45-70 and 22 Hornet I decided on, I picked up a .243 and .270...
(And they whispered in my ear I'll also need a 30-06...)

You have the light and medium covered. I would look for a deal on a 45/70 or a 444. Both are 200 yard cartridges with a good load, and will handle elk & moose, and even big bear if need be. You can always fill in as you go, but I would strongly suggest you go with the big dogs next. ;)

Lol, I would start a poll but you can't access the polls on a phone.  (or at least I don't know how!)

If I were to start a poll it would be to see if my estimation is right.  I figured out all of you who are truly Handicated have these four in your collection.

45-70
30/30
22 hornet
357 either mag or max

Everything else is to the holics taste...but these four are nearly mandatory.

Don't you worry, your truly bitten!
Now all you need are 12Ga, 20Ga, 16Ga, and .410bore, then you got the shotgun end covered.

Oops forgot, you have to get Tracker barrels for your shotguns too!
