I Hate Dentists!

Well, now my heart surgery is getting pushed back even more. I went to the dentist again today and told them the new dentures just aren't working. Not only do they hurt but they make my mouth apear way swollen. The dental assistant argued with me untill I informed her that at the last visit the dentist didn't  think they were right either. Well, now that my gums have healed and the swelling gone down they found one of the problems. Kinda a major one. The new dentist saw trouble right away. It seems the dentist that pulled my teeth was just there temeporarily till this one seeing me now arrived. When he pulled my teeth he left behind several stubbs where the roots broke off. Stubbs which  have sharp points and which are now poking through into my lips. He was suppose to grind them off and obviously didn't! So now, on the 17th, I have to go back and this new dentist will have to cut my gums open, grind off the protusions on the bones, and stitch my gums up when he's done. That's at least another 3 to 4 weeks of having to heal all over again. Giving this dentist credit though, he's actualy a dental surgeon, and he saw the problem and was no more happy than I at the previous dentist's shoddy work. I just hate the healing process all over again, not to mention the pain, and the likelyhood my heart surgery will now be in the middle of hunting season. Well, on the plus side, more popcycles and milk shakes are in my near future. ;) Wish me luck guys. Luck coming from ya'all has gotta be better than mine lately. lol

   Wow, sorry to hear about that.  Hope you get better soon.
 
   My father is a doctor, and he drummed something into me from an early age.  Never ever let a dentist do any type of tooth extraction or other surgical procedure on you, including root canals.  Always demand and go to an Oral Surgeon.   Oral Surgeons are highly trained and specialized, and do nothing all day long but surgical procedures, so they know what they are doing.
 
   The problem is that regular dentists are legally allowed to perform these procedures, and they rarely tell their patients to go to an oral surgeon (until they have botched you up and created bone infections. or worse.)

Good luck Spirithawk.  I know about having to await surgeries.  One doctor wants to do back surgery on me, but the cardiologist won't approve it till I had another by-pass.  My original one dried up and went away.  I failed my latest stress test.

I'm getting a new upper plate.  Mine broke one night when I was eating a salad.  Had it repaired, but now it does not fit right.  Did not like it anyway, teeth were too small.  Much smaller than my original teeth, and when I smiled they could not be seen.  Just, was not natural.  My new plate will have larger teeth, more like what I had originally.  I think they look more natural.

3 weeks before my hip replacement, I had to get 2 teeth pulled. Went to an oral surgeon that had pulled 2 of my wisdom teeth 20 years earlier. In and out in just alittle over an hour. My regular dentist will not do that, as he says, has enough work above the gum line. I have more of a problem going in to see my accountant at tax time, than a dentist. Physical pain I've always been able to deal with. Heck, I was off all pain med's 2 days after my hip surgery, and would take a couple Tylonol for pain if I needed it. The mental anxiety on how much tax's are does more to shake me up than anything. gypsyman

The wife is wanting to move back to Virginia.  I remember the income taxes I had to pay when I lived in Maryland, no thank you.   If she gets a job and moves I think I will settle in Tennessee.   

Here in Alaska we only have federal and property taxes.  No income taxes, and only three cities have a sales tax.  Most people avoid those towns when possable.  I know the city of North Pole has a sales tax, but we do all our shopping in Fairbanks or on Ft Wainwright.

I'm with you Hawk, sorry about all the pain and time not to mention the extra cost, they are over paid pieces of human secreaction, i had been going to the same dentice for over 10 years then one day i got a tooth ace and it took me 10 days to get in to have him fix it, then a year later same thing only too had to suffer for 6 days with tooth ake, talk about being dumb i had another tooth ake and it took 4 days to see him.  well not being the sharpest knife in the drawer i have dropped him and am going to a nother one in 4 weeks just for cleaning, i think we should start sewing them for pain and suffering.

I now have a reasonably young and attractive lady dentist. May I suggest you all do the same.
 
1st., it seems modern dental teachings suggest it should not hurt.
2nd., women in general are more concerned about inflicting pain.
3rd., a womans hands are smaller, meaning I don't leave with the TMJ flaring up.
And finally a newer dentist is looking to build a practice. They are not yet covered up with too much business to fit you in this month.
 
My mother was an assistant to an Oral Surgeon. Growing up with stories of abcess and incompitant dentist around the supper table made me a bit more discerning about health care, especially Dentists.

  Although I think we are way too much a litiguous society...it sure sounds as though you have a genuine case here, considering all the unnecessary pain & expense you ha to go through because of the first dentist's carelessness.
 
  Beyond that, as Cheesehead says..dentistry seems to be the very dedicated in trying to eliminated society's need for their profession.  They have come up with some remarkable things in recent years..things which will drastically cut the number of visits necessary by the individual.
 
  I have been going to my dentist for about 35 years.  He stays up-to-date on all procedures and is just great.  Even in the most problematical dental problems, the only real pain I feel is the initial shots..and even then , he uses certain preps and practices which cut that pain greatly.  He ha done 2-3 root canals for me and the greatest problem during the procedure was my falling asleep during the procedure.  He is very reasonable in his charges also, so Indeed, we (my family and I) feel blessed with our dentist.

Thanks guys. Well, day after tomorrow I go in. This Dental Surgeon seems good and I'm sure hoping so. Getting real tired of not being able to eat anything that needs chewed. lol
