Waist high waders
« on: August 09, 2012, 09:14:05 AM »
Any one use those waist high waders.  I have to get new waders and have been thinking about those waist high ones.  Chest waders are too bulky, and quite often the water is crotch deep, too high for hip waders.  Sure hate getting waders filled with water, when I'm wearing them.

We virtually live in waders during hunting season.  The mornings are always cool with lots of fog, that leaves everything wet.  Or we will have a shower during the night.  Sometimes it's raining, and rain pants don't last long walking through alders and willows about waist high.  Waders are the only thing that make sense.

Then we are getting on and off the 4-wheeler.  Again rain pants don't last long there either.  Looks like with those waist high waders you wear them sort of like a pair of pants.

Has anyone had experience with them?

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I think you should try them because you perceive the value. I went for years trout fishing in an area where the water is shallow, and I used chest waders just because that's what everybody else was doing. Then I realized that a decent set of hip boots would be high enough to keep me dry, be much more comfortable to wear in the typically hot weather I fish in, and were cheaper to replace if I ruined them. I tried the hip boots and it was a great decision.

One thing you will need to look at, because I learned the importance of it when using hip boots, is your belt or however you're going to support those waders. I've seen some waist highs with just an elastic waist. That may be good enough, and it may not.

My closest application that resembles yours is that I keep a pair of elastic waist and velcro ankle rain paints in my rain jacket. I would not want to be without it. They're light weight ripstop and they roll up so I can fit them in the jacket pocket when I'm not using them.

I still use chest waders for deeper places, but those hip boots are fabulous in the trout streams.

Also, I just replaced my old Red Ball chest waders after about 20 years and enough Barge cement to build a house. They finally had so many little holes in them I couldn't find them to fix them anymore. Got a pair of light weight Hodgmans, and ooo-eee are they good! Cost under $100 and they are comfortable and light, and I just love the things. Waders have really advanced since I bought the old pair.

When wade fising I wear chest high---you never need them until you need them.
I always got a size or two larger--it made it a lot easier to get in and out of a boat when there was a lot of room. I wore good heavy fishing boots--not the light booties because of sting rays, They were comfortable and comforting.
A short waisted waterproof on top---looks kinda like the old Ike jacket--short at the waist and it was comfrotable for rain.
I do not have to contend with the cold as you have---the water temps don't get much below 55 degrees and even at 40 degrees, after a few cast you are all for pulling off some clothes as long as you can stay dry.
