Another shorty, camo, take-down maxi finished
« on: August 10, 2012, 09:31:47 AM »
Well, this is what my Maxi evolved to.  16.5 inch barrel, target crown, quick take down, SB2 frame, camo MC checkered stock, Burris Zee rings, Bushnell Banner 4 x 32 wide angle, Allen 9 round cartridge holder and camo sling.  The go anywhere gun.  Takes down to 18 inches.  The rounds in the cartridge holder are 180 gr. Hornady SSPs over Lil Gun for 2150 fps.out of the short barrel.  I want to chrony them out of Patty's 22 incher for a comparison......perhaps tomorrow.

Very nice! What did you use for the take down screw? Is this a common Handi mod? you say it is 18" when taken down. Which part is longer, the barrel scope assembly or stock?

Like most of my Handis, this rifle is a product of this forum.  The midwives here helped give it birth.  The barrel came from someone here I can't remember who.  Although, one of our .357 barrels came from Jeepmann1948, and it had been reamed with the forum's reamer..  The stock came from gendoc and the frame from boatboy.  Thanks Guys.

No George, yours wasn't cut.  Patty's rifle is wearing it.  Like the 7mm-08s, we've had five .357s.  I get a little fuzzy on who's who.
(Is there a happy face up there for CRS?)

Tim, I still haven't gotten a deer with the shorty .38-55......it ain't the rifle, just the vegetarian lugging it around.  Perhaps this year.

You folks make me feel deprived.  I just reamed a second maxi and every time I look at it, it seems too long.  Of course yours looks great.  My hacksaw just went into hiding, seeing me eying these pictures.

Pete, I'm not jealous or nothin'.  Just cause you've got a good looking highly maneuvarable intrinsically pointable can't miss deer slaying machine don't mean I've got to have one too.

Aw heck, I may as well go fire up the bandsaw and get started, or I won't be able to sleep now.  See what you've done?   :-X

Choate Machine makes all H&R synthetic stocks, most of the camos come on factory guns, but are bought and sold in our classifieds all the time and H&R sells them also, they're listed on retail parts page in the FAQs sticky above.

I like them allot too... converted all my "hunting" handis over to them!

I got mine right here on our classifieds as Tim mentioned.   ;)

I was also thinking on your "take down" comment Pete...

I would love to make one like my old H&R 12 ga has...

CW, that's slick old lady 8)   That oughta work fine in a shotgun, but I don't know how it would do in a rifle.  Add another variable perhaps?  And then, perhaps not.  The latch would ensure that the lug engaged the pin at the same point all the time ??? ???

I like your "Hunting Handis".

I have the same gun, I just need the take down knob.

On a lead sled, I rest the front right at the forend screw.

When you shoot at the bench, do you put that thumbscrew right on the rest?

When I'm shooting off a bench, the rifle rests on the pivot.  I never rest it on the forend.  There has been quite a bit of discussion about this.  Shooting in the field, the knob usually sits at my palm with fingers forward of it.  Even with heavy loads, the Maxi's recoil isn't severe enough to get hurt by the knob.

The knob is just a 3/4" diameter with a 3/4"  1/4 - 20 stud that was in stock at a local Do-It-Best Hardware  There's an "O" ring on the stud and a thin neoprene washer under the knob,
