Federal 300gr cast core
« on: February 07, 2004, 05:19:13 AM »
dont reload yet and dont really like the penetration of soft point. Is this a good option in 44 or is there a better factory option? deer season is over so will be just for hogs, also is there any rounds beside softpoint that would be good for both. arent the cast cores built for penetration? thanks in advance :D

When I asked at the gun shop, That is the ammo they recomended for hogs (Fed 300 cast core) They shot straight thru anything I tried on the range, but are way too pricey for me. I am sure I'll get alot of arguments but i have been getting very good penetration on TARGETS with winchester jacketed soft points. I will find out next week how they work on hogs, I hope. I am sure however the castcores would work great.

I did a hog hunt in Tennessee, and used the Federal 300 gr. cast core bullets. I got my hog with one shot from my Ruger Super Redhawk. The bullet went through and through and blew up the heart. I liked the round so much, I bought a bunch of Cast Performance 300 gr. hard cast bullets and load my own now. A lot less expensive than the Federal factory rounds.

federal cast core ammunition is loaded with bullets made by cast performance.  They are LBT style and hard.  Federal doesn't load them as hot as buffalo bore but they will likely shoot through a hog and perform well.
