Implements for a full scale Parrott Rifle
« on: August 13, 2012, 10:27:29 AM »
Here are ram rods, worm, tampion, and vent cover I just finished for someone.  He also wanted a mount to hang the rods on the wall.  I made the mounts out of walnut.  They turned out real nice.
There is a lot of work in a tampion! :o   That thing started out as a 7 1/4" X 7 1/4" X 11" long block of laminated wood (four pieces).  Now most of it is laying on my shop floor in sawdust form. :P :P

Nice work!  I can see how the tampion would work well on the Model 1861 Parrott, but have you tried it on the Model 1863 Parrott?

Zulu, that is some beautiful work! Did you make the worm screw? I 'm going to make one for a project of mine, like the design better than what I had in mind. I have a bit of seasoned walnut or osage orange to make my tampion. To paint black to match the gun or not to paint, that is the question.  :-\  Your opinion appreciated.
Beautiful work sir!

Artilleryman,
Is the 1863 Parrott the one with no flair on the muzzle?  I don't know how you could keep a tampion in unless you tied it back to the carriage.

skratch,
Yes I made the worm.  The design comes from "Antique Ordnance Publishers Implement and Equipment Drawings".
Personally, I wouldn't paint it.  Historically, They probably were painted.  Painting walnut is a sin against nature. :)

The Model 1863 eliminated the muzzle swell and went from a 2.9 inch bore to a 3 inch bore.
