paypal
« on: August 13, 2012, 10:52:32 AM »
I frequent several classifieds threads on this site and others. I notice a lot of people use Paypal.   The part I find funny is when someone sells something, they want to be paid as a paypal gift.  It may be me, but to me that is stealing from them.  They offer a service and everyone tries to sidestep the fees they charge for that service.  If everyone continued to do this, they could close as they have no money to keep the site going.  Just my two cents.

When you pay someone as a gift YOU pay the fees & the seller gets the full amount he is asking. On a regular transaction the fees are deducted from the amount the seller receives. PayPal gets paid either way.

Not only that, they're using the money you have in your PP account, so even if they didn't get fees, they're makin money on transactions.

ok so if I send someone a payment as a gift, I pay fees?  So the seller gets stuck for you selling an item.  Nice

Nobody is getting stuck - if you choose to pay with PayPal, you choose to pay the fees yourself rather than "sticking" the seller with them.  If you choose to pay by Postal Money Order, you choose to pay the modest fee the PO charges to handle the MO.  If you choose to pay by whatever method the seller accepts, your choice determines how much, if any, fees *you* pay, so that the seller gets the price they asked.  You can also choose not to purchase the item if the fees, etc. involved are too much.

If you send the money as a gift when you're actually buying something and you get ripped off, Paypal won't give you your money back.  Since Paypal doesn't like you buying certain gun related items, some folks use the gift option to keep Paypal from knowing what was bought and sold.

What don't they like?
I have been using PayPal to purchase all sorts of guns, gun parts, ammo and reloading items for close to 5 years now and not once have they ever questioned a purchase or sale by me on any type of gun related item be it as a gift or any other of the choices. Maybe I have just been lucky but I have never had a problem.

I have been using pay pal since it was Xcom. They used to not charge fees and made their money by the interest on what they were holding. When evilBay acquired pay pal that all changed. They started the user fees and anti-gun attitude.  I still like paypal because it is fast and basically 'blind-drop'. I also like not needing to go to the bank to get the cash to stand in line to purchase a postal money order. Those that don't want pay pal I send a check using the bank's bill payer service. That is also a blind-drop and doesn't require a trip to the P.O. I will call in a credit card to a seller that can do that, but remember that transaction is never secure. Since I do a lot of on-line commerce I also subscribe to an I.D. protection service. So far this approach has worked well and if anyone was unhappy , they never told me. I have never been disappointed by trusting our GBO brothers and sisters and  will continue to do so.

Like you said, that is what they say but that is not the rules they follow.

yeah so my point let the seller eat the cost they are choosing to get paid by paypal.  Everyone wants a gift.  I have sent things as a gift, and have never seen a fee added when I did.

There is no fee for a gift.  I could care less about sticking Paypal.

I cannot buy or sell on ebay without using Paypal.  The cost of using it, is a lot.

Ebay has the best prices on Leupold scopes anywhere.  I can sell things that are worthless for $400.00 to $500.00 and I do it all the time.

If your really selling items that are worthless for $4-500 it seems to me that whatever charges you incure. Your still far ahead.

Nobody is ripping off pay pal. They get their fee on EVERY transaction. The only question is who pays it, buyer or seller.

and if you are selling junk for that money, I doubt you sell very much.  Your feedback there must really suck.  Sometimes the things you say really amaze me.  Other times I just realize it is your way of trying to fit in and be one of the gang.  Other times I realize you are just not all there.

Recently sold 2 items I paid less than $20.00 for, for $950.00 and they PMed me and asked if I had anymore.  Sold a book I got for free for $95.00.  Sold a bank I bought for 5 cents for $30.00.  Sold a Walther box I got for free for $80.00.  I hate Paypal and I don't care if people stiff them.  I should be able to accept any kind of payment I want to.  Paypal was fine until ebay bought them.  If something makes you feel guilty them don't do it.  I gave up on feeling guilty a long time ago.

bubba you should calm down.

Here is a clip from my PayPal account. It concerns a 'gift' I sent a GBO brother for a flintlock rifle. Please note the fee.

     Date:
 Jul 15, 2012
Time:
 09:29:16 PDT
Status:
 Completed

              Amount sent:
 -$288.00 USD
Fee amount:
 -$8.65 USD
Net amount:
 -$296.65 USD

I don't make this stuff up, I don't need to. I would like to share some facts with our GBO brothers and sisters.

How many buy and sell on GBO daily and never offer a plug nickel to help the sight out?
