270 Handi
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:06:11 AM »
Well I last Fri I picked up a nice real nice looking NEF in 270 with a 3x9 Leupold mounted on it. What's a good starting point for hand loads? I'm just getting started on loading, dies & brass should be in soon.

Thanx

Get out your manuels and start reading...  I cringe when guys ask for data on line... Nothing against anyone here, many of these guys I actually would absolutely trust. But the thing is, mistakes happen and when a mistake happens with powder charges, people can and do get hurt! Simply the law of averages says, the more people you get involved the better the chances a mistake will happen...

What I will tell you is I have had very good luck with IMR 4831 powder and a 130G bullet.

Good luck with the "new" 270,

What CW said. Buy a manual and study it.
You can go to Hodgdon's web site and they will give you load info.

My mistake, I meant a starting point with the bullet itself. 130gr? I have a new Lymann Manuel and I've read it a couple times, and I need to read it again several more before I start. Saftey is my 1st goal here. Thanx

Hard to beat Hodgdon's on line reloading data - you can look by caliber or filter down to a specific powder or bullet and print out the results.  Pretty nice for free, and since they own the rights to Hodgdon, IMR and Winchester, they cover a lot of ground in one spot. It's my first stop for reloading data these days.

Dan, the .270 was designed around a 130 gr bullet.  I've had great luck with the 130 gr Rem Core loc over a starting load of H4350 off Hogdon's website.  Good luck with that and enjoy!  44 Man

The 270 and a 130 gr bullet go together like peanut butter & jelly.Start  with the suggested starting load from the Lyman manual and work up with 4831 powder and you will be set to hunt anything on this continent.Layne Simpson of Shooting Times magazine polled the Alaskan outfitters on which caliber accounted for more one shot kills than any other and the 270 won out. He attributed it to the fact that 270 shooters shot their guns more and placed their shots better because of more practice. My Dad carried a 270 while he was working in Canada and never felt under-gunned,I have used it with great success in Texas , New Mexico & Colorado. My suggestion is go forth and enjoy the 270 ;D

I've got a 98Mauser 8mm on its way from Oregon now. I'm sitting on a 8mm-06AI barrel I got from my other uncle that built one several years ago. Soon as my small ring is built I'll start on the large ring. My Handis are just as addictive, hehehe. I'm looking forward to this 270 though. Oh yea, I have been diagnosed with a compulsive disorder. Hehehe.

Like 44 Man, I have had great success with our 3 .270s all liking (a middle book load of) H4350 and have used Speer, Nosler and Remington bullets with the same recipe and had great accuracy, I have loaded for friends and have been very amazed then "my" load is sub moa in 5 or 6 guns total now so maybe H4350 and a 130 gr would be a good place to start........  Good luck, the .270 can be a wonderful round.   thejanitor

It's the ejecter type, and it's not extracting the case unfired. I'm gonna go through the FAQ here and look for Possible problems. I think I want to swap it to extractor like my 45-70.

Do the ejector tune shown in the FAQs ejector section. A properly working ejector barrel will easily eject unfired factory ammo, are you working with fired brass? If so, the cases need to be properly full length resized before reloading, this applies even to brass fired in the same rifle unless the loads are mild.  There's no easy way to convert to a factory extractor, the underlug has to be modified to accept the extractor cam.

I got to thinking, I loaded it with my uncles reloads from a long while back. I bet it's from when I repolished the brass on my buffer. I'm gonna pull the bullets and scrap all the old brass. There where a few of them that was bad. I'm not trusting the rest of them now.
I read the FAQ, I'll polish it up and add a bb 1st. Which design is better, more consistant? I was thinking about cutting the notch and adding a shim for extractor.

Thanx

Extractors are 100% reliable, the same can't be said about ejectors, if ejectors weren't problematic in rifle chamberings, H&R would probably have never switched to extractors on all their centerfire rifles, failure to eject was the biggest and most common complaint about H&R rifles, they seem to work fine in rimfires and shotguns tho, they're still making them with ejectors. It's really too bad they don't offer the option on accessory rifle barrels, then at least the parts would still be available,  ejector barrels would really be appreciated by many.

The reloads that where sticking has a slight bulge in the brass 1/4" from the bottom. Barely enough to "scrape" the brass. I tried a box of new ammo and they flew right out, extractor works perfectly. There is no telling how old the loads are, I got them when my dad passed away 2 years ago. I'll buy a bullet puller and save them and throw away all the brass.

Like some of the other guys have mentioned, it is pretty hard to beat a 130 grain bullet of your choice and H4350.   I have a couple of .270's that shoot this combo well.   If your in the mood for a little more speed,  check out some published load data from RL17 for the 270.   It gives about 150 to 200fps increase over most other powders essentially taking the .270 to very near 7mm mag levels, but be careful, it can be temp sensative and shows pressure signs pretty quickly as you reach max. ...but it is also very accurate!

Sounds good, I'll play with more speed and pressures when I get comfortable loading. I'm just gonna stick to the starting/mid levels for now. How much more knockdown do you get with 100-200fps more?
