My trail or "woods loafin" guns are a S&W model 15 .38 and a Blackhawk .45 colt.  I have a fine S&W model 34 .22 that I'm tempted to carry, but I just can't bring myself to carry a caliber that won't deal with anything that I may encounter.

if you are not hunting a specific animal, then always take a bigger gun than yu anticipate the need of.then you wont be dissapointed in its performance.

I was part of a team that investigated a murder back in about 66.  The firearm used was a Ruger Bearcat loaded with Win. .22 shorts.  One shot fired into the victims' heart and it was fatal.  Lucky shot, don't know do know that the distsance was in inches not feet.  Much rather have a .22 rf handgun loaded with long rifles than a box of rocks.
