question about negotiating salary
« on: August 15, 2012, 07:47:08 AM »
I joined the Army when I turned 17, and was in Basic Training 2 weeks after my 18th birthday.  20 years later, I realize I have NO experience with getting a "real job".  My resume is out for 20-25 positions, and I have no doubt I can seal the deal if I just get the call for an interview.  Then what.....?

Being retired military, I have "Tri-Care for Life" and VA coverage.  My plan is to continue to rely on them for healthcare coverage until I am put in the ground.

What sort of negotiating leverage do I have if I am offered a salary that includes company health benefits?  Is it common to waive that coverage and ask for more pay since I already bring my own to the table?  What sort of adjustment (in hourly pay or monthly salary) can I push for?

Thanks for any advice.  I know the VA CAN help me with this, but quite honestly, I am less than impressed with anything I have received from them when it comes to transitional "expertise".
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

I think the negogiating $'s in place of benefits will vary from company to company.
Where I'm at they'll give me something like $1500 cash once a year if I opt out. They tell us they spend $4200 a year for it.
I'm covered by two other policies besides here. I probably should. But I haven't opted out.

I'm in a similar position, retired military/civil service. I also draw SS and have medicare. Took a county job and now have state/county medical and retierment. Tried to opt out but it's a numbers game. The more employees you have in a program, the lower the total cost.
Sell yourself on the ability to stick with the job through tough times, leadership ability, clean background and flexibility. Most public and private employers like to hire vets as they are a known quantity.
Good luck.

You should ask what the companys cost for HC is per person per pay period the divide by the expected hours to be worked . Then you have a per hr cost . Then add that to what you will make for the hours you will be expected to work. We do it all the time when the spouse has better coverage or free coverage.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
