Now that we have lost MT, I would like to refresh my memory again.

I will be loading in my Marlins:
the 30/30  with 170 speer probably
35Rem. with Speer 180 FN or Rem 200
45/70 with Sierra 300 fn / Hornady 350/ 405 REM.
If you load any of these please share and I will return my loading to you.

I shoot mostly cast bullets these days and am using 2400 and unique  But the IMR 3031 and Win 748 has always been favorites to use with the 30/30. Any good reloading books will give you some good loads to start out with. I have also used 3031 in the 45/70 also.  I have never loaded for the 35 Rem but see that 3031 is used for that caliber also so It may be a good powder to start out with as you an use it for all three calibers. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I will vouch for IMR3031 for those 3 calibers. I've tried many different powders and have found none as consistantly as accurate with those weight bullets you mentioned as 3031. 140OB

Feeding a Marlin 35
« Reply #3 on: February 07, 2004, 01:51:18 PM »
I have been playing with a mild/medium load in my Marlin 35 rem. for about 2 weeks and she is working fine.
I used H-335 because it flows thru my powder measure like butter.
I have some .357 160gr. cast bullets with a gas checks I got from Billy Marr a year or two back (he's no longer in business).
CCI large rifle primers and some mixed brand brass.
Using 35gr. of H-335 and that gas checked 160gr. bullet I was shooting about 2 1/2 inches at 50 yards with open sights.
I don't like a scope on a leaver action...but...just to test I mounted a 3-9 Tasco on that microgrove barrel and put 10 rounds in a 1 1/4 inch group with the same load :-D
I then removed the scope and rang the 100 yard gong (8") 5 out of 5 with iron sights from a standing position.
Needless to say, I will be getting a lot more use out of that 35 now with half the recoil of hunting loads.

Them Marlins will shoot and will do it with cast bullets.

I'm a big fan of 3031 powder as well. I've found it to produce good results in everything from my .222 to my 45/70. I usually keep a small amount of IMR4198 on hand, as well as some 2400 for my .45 cowboy. Except for black powder, these are the only 3 that I regularly load anymore.

I've become an H4895 fan of late for heavy loads in the 45-70 and 30-30. For moderate loads I have always liked imr 4227.  I have burned a lot of 3031 in the past and the only thing I didn't like was the unburned powder residue left in the barrel with less than max loads in my 45-70.

I don't load target or plinking loads anymore, just hunting loads.
4570-Lee 405 gr HP. 43 gr RX7.
3030- LEE 170 gr gcFP. 26 gr RX7.
I use RX7 exclusively in those + the 308, also a 170gcFP LEE, 33 gr RX7.
The cast bullets have taken all of our deer for many years now. Kind of a spcl feeling making meat with a bullet that was once spinning around on someones wheel. POWDERMAN.

Hey Powderman. :) Glad to see you here!!!!! WELCOME!!  I have been starting to use 2400 in military cases. 308, 762x54, and now that I got a mould in 8MM that also. In 30/30 I have used 748 but just started to use that. Have used 3031 in the 45/70 but open to more suggestions. It sounds like you like the RX7 I might have to try some. It must work good for cast eh? Jim

JH45GUN. Achieved velocity and lower pressures are what led me to the RX7. There may be better, newer powders, but it aint broke, so I'm not gonna try to fix it. I can click the link you gave me to get here, but when I try to bookmark it all I get  is the regular greybeard site, or it says the site does not exist. I'd like to bookmark this site. POWDERMAN.
