6.8 SPC
« on: August 17, 2012, 03:57:02 PM »
I have tried searching for this category on the forum and I can't find anything. Do you guys know if there is any barrels available or could I get a blank and have it reamed out to the proper size?

Thanks!!!

That's the H&R classifieds. There are 2 .270 barrels there right now, buy one and have it stubbed and re-chambered to what you want. (spc, or spc2?)

IIRC, Green Mountain has a barrel blank with the correct twist 1:11 for the 6.8.  It could be done as a stub or a liner.  It might also be done as a rebore, not sure about this w/o looking at some chamber drawings.

While .270 Win and 6.8 spc share the same bullet diameter (bore) but with the .270 based on the long 30-06 case and the 6.8 spc based on the short .30 Rem, there will be no rechambering .270 barrels to 6.8 spc. You have 270 Weatherby Mag and 270 WSM in the same bore - neither of which will work as a rechamber and neither of which are available from H&R in any event. So the Green Mt stub/or liner is your only route for a Handi.

7mm08 is however available, factory fitted for $96, and, certainly in a single shot break action, would be a more effective choice in any event, albeit somewhat more common.

A 22 Hornet Superlight or a standard barrel Handi would make a dandy donor for a 6.8 SPC rebore.  ;) I've got three Superlights that have been rebored, a 260 Rem, 6x45 and 9.3x62, they're a joy to carry. Plan on spending $300-$350 for the 6.8 tho. JES does .338" and larger 3-groove for $225 shipped, but he doesn't do anything smaller. Wayne York does tho, he did my 260 and 6x45.  ;)

That's just the cost of the barrel, when all shipping, fitting and tax is paid, that cost climbs to about $160, about half the cost of rebore or stub where a fella has something he really wants that's a bit different.  ;)

I got the same mis-information and believed it until very recently.
I just got a barrel yesterday that came from H&R as a 30-06. It was cut off and used as the stub and the donor barrel. I hear the process referred to as "stubbed back on itself" The smith who did this one uses a band for the forend hanger, and puts an excellent finish on it. I have 4 other stubbed barrels and this is the best looking of the five. He chambered it for 30 carbine, and I understand his price was less than $200.
Unfortunately I bought it second-hand, so I can't refer you, but I'll bet somebody will.
.270 to 6.8SPC should be right up his alley.

ibgp3,

So do I understand it correctly: the barrel is cut off ahead of the stub, re-chambered at that point, then the stub is reamed out to take the now 6.8 chambered barrel?  Clever. Takes a few inches off the barrel but with 6.8 spc, anything over 16" will do. Now that you say it, it makes perfect sense.

Don't give me any credit,  ;D
...I just found the process, somebody else figured it out.
