Encore Stock......Really Mad
« on: August 18, 2012, 02:02:22 AM »
I bought an Encore because I wanted a muzzleloader with a walnut stock.  It was used but in perfect condition.  I mounted the scope on it yesterday.  I had it out on the back porch looking through the scope this morning and now it has a 1.5" crack in the wrist of the stock and I haven't even fired it.  John Barsness stated in a recent article on single shots that he'd gone over to composite on these because the walnut buttstocks crack.  I hate to sell it, but if I am going to have use a plastic stock I'll just buy an Impact.

Send it in, they will replace it.

I sent in a walnut pistol grip after it cracked from my 15" 454 Casull barrel and they replaced it.

I currently use synthetic standard rifle stock, (cut down) synthetic standard stock for my daughter and also a synthetic thumbhole stock which all have Limbsaver pads with synthetic standard forends for my 209x50 and 223 Remington barrels since they have checkering which I like, but I use Pachmayr grip and magnum forend for my 338 Federal barrel.

Just exactly how do you mount your scopes? You said the stock was used but in perfect condition, then you mounted the scope, now the stock has a 1.5" crack in the wrist. Might be time for someone else to do your gunsmithing.

Even after S&W bought T/C, they still have a pretty good customer service policy and they will replace the stock.

Since I do gunsmithing everyday I doubt I cracked it.  It's on it's way back.  Hopefully the replacement won't crack as this seems to be a trend.

Mine came with a plastic pos stock and I replaced it with pepper laminate furnature because I too had heard of that issue.  While walnut is of course a classic, the stuff they put on Encores has no character what so ever, so the laminate actually looks better. And I don't have to worry about having it crack... It also took a lot of the wallop out of the 50 cal heavy loads.

Gotta wonder don't you, usually takes recoil or something serious to crack a stock.

If I have to carry the extra weight of a laminate stock, I'll resort to another muzzleloader.  The Encore is already heavy.  I suspect the .375H&H barrel it had on it when I bought it was too much for the walnut stock.  Our very high humidity isn't the best thing for wood stocks either.  The crack is right along the grain.  It appears to be a common problem.

Yeah it's a kinda heavy, but not that bad. I lugged it around at +10k feet chasing mule deer in Colorado.  The thing that bugged me about it for that trip is that it didn't shoot conicals all that great. Sabots are definately the ticket for Encores.

They called today and said they don't make that buttstock anymore.  They are sending me a black tupperware buttstock.  Not really what I wanted, but it will get me through the season.

That really sucks Mark.

Amazes me when I see comments like this.   I made in through 40 odd years of using TC Contenders, Encores and traditional muzzle loaders... a h*ll of lot of them and shot a h*ll of lot, and never had the problems some folks seem to have.

I live in Colorado and I bought the encore thinking it was a a++ gun but I have had the same problem with conicals the accuracy is in the trash can and in Colorado you can't hunt with sabots. I keep thinking I'll figure the secret out but no luck yet. I also wanted walnut but couldn't find one had to settle for the flex tech stock in black.

What conicals have you tried? Pellets or loose powder?

Power belts 295gr and I tried some lead maxi hunters. I use triple 7 loose powder and I have tried blackhorn 209. We can't use pellets in Co.

I had the same issue and found that the Thor 250gr bullets with 130gr BH 209 gave me nice groups out to 300 yards. Not as good as the Barnes Spitfires though, so as soon as I got back from Colorado I went back to them...

Cut off the bullet guide and have the barrel re crowned. They are to deep for big conicals and some are not aligned properly.

Laminate WILL indeed crack. The Contender thumbholes in nutmeg once sold by Eben Brown had a fairly high rate of returns because of such. One of my High Plains thumbholes cracked. It was mounted properly, not overtightened and on a mild caliber -- and yet it developed a hairline crack (fixed by HP, by the way).

Still no sign of my stock.  I may have to buy one to get through the season.

Well, then they are of poor quality... I have had a thumbhole on my 300 RUM for years, regularily use it in a lead sled for load development and good as the day I bought it. Also on my Encore ML.

If it will survive a lead sled it will never break.

Single shot collector....examined many contender/encore walnut stocks. Found that approx.20% have a crack on top behind the receiver where it mates to wood. What I believe causes this is not holding the receiver to keep it from turning  in  the wood when torquing the socket head thru bolt.  You can actually see this happen...insert allen wrench , add a little righty-tighty and watch the receiver twist in the wood.

Sounds then like you could crack the stock mounting a scope if you were to put the stock in a vise and torque the base down on the barrel?

This is a common problem.  It's because the wood is paper thin in that area.
