Stand Down for Vets
« on: August 18, 2012, 11:27:52 AM »
Went to Stand Down to day.  I try and go every year, mainly to socialize with fellow vets.  Today I noticed for the first time the volume of young women.  Oh, there has always been the older gals, like my wife, but they were few.  These older women may have medical issues, but it's the kind that comes with age, not war.  But today I saw many young women.  A lot of them were walking with limps, canes, or crutches.  Some with prostetics, just like the male vets.  I know it's been a nasty war, war is always nasty.  But our women have played a bigger part in this war than at any other time in history.  And it's showing in our new Vet population.

I can't decide whether I like the new policies that allow women in war or not.  One part that really bothered me was the number in the homeless line, male and female.  There is a young woman I see around town frequently, she wears her hair standing up spiked and multi colors.  I always looked at her with a feeling of disgust, thinking she was just someones spoiled brat, like so many I see up at the University.  Today she was at Stand Down, she is a Vet, and she is homeless.  This is really bothering me.  I'm having a hard time dealing with this.  Especially the way I had viewed this young woman in the past.  Now I discover she is a Vet, and deserves far more respect than I have been giving her.

I guess many of us need to take a serious look at how we gauge others, and our attitudes towards the younger generation.  Those young women with punk hairdos and tatoos are now fighting for our freedom.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

a good many people deserve far more respect than we give them when we judge them by appearance, without knowing them or their stories.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Sad that many were in the homeless line. Many joined the services to have a  future of any kind with the present state of our economy and the worlds. I hope we can get this nation back on track where our children can "plan on a future" and not have to put all at risk just to be able to survive. ear

An economic crash like the one of the 1920s is the only thing that will get the US off of the road to Socialism that we are on and give our children a chance at a future with freedom and possibility of economic success.

i have the most upmost respect for anybody who served our country in the armed forces! you have basically signed your life away for your country.you must follow the orders of your superiors into situations that will and often do threaten your very existence on this earth.for that all of our country thanks you!

however the decisions you make after you leave the armed forces will effect you all of your life.if you choose to become basically unemployable by tatooing, peircing and messing your hair up so that nobody will employ you because there are lots of normal looking applicants for the same job you just applied for, well then that is indeed your choice also and i respect your right to make that choice.i will fight for your right to make that choice. but as with all choices there are repercussions. not all choices are wise. the lady you speak of may very well become someone you can respect for more than just their military service in a few years. who knows?
