Yeah, I'm gonna start with H110 and WW296 cause I have those on hand. If that don't do to suit me I'll try some of that IMR or H4227 or Hodgdon Lil Gun. Oh, I forgot I got some WW680 and RL-7 I will try too.

, I really need to check to see what all I have on hand that is will work with the Max. I know I have all those I mentioned, and I have some Unique, 2400, WW231, 700X, Bullseye, and HP-38 in the shotgun/pistol powders. I know some of those are a bit fast. I was gonna try the 'slower' pistol powders first, sorry I forgot I have some 2400 on hand, it's another slower pistol powder in the range of H110 and 296. Anyhow, I got a bunch that will work, the fun will be finding out which one(s) work best. I got a bunch of 158-160 grain hard cast SWC's I wanna give a try along with the 180 XTP's, and the next time I order from Midway I'm gonna get me a box of the Rem. 180 grainers made for the Max. and I may get some Rem. 200 grainers made for the .35 Remington and such. Can't wait.

I dug out a Hercules Guide from the heyday of the max. For 180 grain bullets it shows top charges of  14.9 Blue Dot, 16.8 2400, 25.0 RE-7. For 200s, it shows 11.6 Blue Dot, 14.1 2400, 22.3 RE-7. As always, start 10% low and work up.

All three powders should give hunting load velocities with the 180 bullets, but only RE-7 was giving real good velocity w/ the 200s.

Thanks DJ, I'll print this for reference. I forgot to add those Rem. 200's when I made my last Midway order. I already have a list for another order so put them on my list. You say the RN's worked better than the pointy ones in the heavier bullets?

I dunno about spitzers in the Max. Never tried any. I'm pretty sure 180 or 200 would stabilize, but have my doubts about whether they would expand. Most of those bullets were designed for .358 Win or .35 Whelen and velocities 500 fps or more than you can get from the Max.

Leftoverdj:  There is a 180 Speer flat nose, 180 RN Speer, Sierra, Hornady and a 150 Rem. softpoint that are designed for the lower velocities.  A well stocked store with reloading supplies should have some.  I would not even be afraid to try a 200 RN.

Also there should be a 150 grain SSP out there.

Keep up the expermentation and find something that works before I start reloading for mine.

Dave, I'm more of a cast bullet shooter than anything else, but any bullet meant for the .35 Rem will work fine in the Max. Up where you are, the 200 grain RNs are probably your best bet because they will give better penetration while still expanding.

For those of us who aren't likely to shoot anything bigger than a whitetail, the 180 grain Hornady XTPs or the 180 grain Remingtons were designed with the Max in mind. The 150 grain Rem is obsolete, but there are still some floating around.

Hornady makes a SP SSP 180gr  (single shot pistol) bullet I don't know about expansion but it burnt right thru a piece of 1/4" steel at 50 yrds, and almost went thru a peice of 1/2" steel this babys stout. 8)

Hey guys I have tested out the 180 grn ssp from hornady and it actually expanded more than the 180 xtp, but it did not have as good penitration.  I have also killed a whitetail with them before I decided to just stick with the xtp.  The only real advatage that I can think of is they have a better ballistic coificiant (32 and still can't spell  ) and will have less bullet drop on long range shots, like that really matters with the max    Anyway they are still kind of fun but look funky when you have a straightwalled case and a pointed bullet just my  :money:
I must be crazy.

There was a guy posting here a while back that had remington do a run of 10,000 150 Sprie Points and was selling them.

You might find his name in the old posts if you do a search.

Know what you mean I was going to order a target stand from Midway but the shipping was more than the stand :?:  not sure what that was al about but i was not going to spend $35 bucks for a $17 stand.  Hey BBF look into the remington 180 grainers they shoot well and are a lot cheaper for targets, or yotes, or cans, or milk jugs, or sheesh this list could take a little time

Sounds like somebody made a mistake on the shipping charges. I ordered, brass, bullets, a couple or three small Lee products, and a Williams sight and my shipping (Brown Truck) was between 8/9 bucks. Shucks my bullets weighed over 2 1/2 lbs. Oh well, at least you'll be rollin' yer own.

The reg shipping is 9.20 on any small items if the order is less than 25.00 then they tack on another 3.00 Would have ordered from Natchez but they were out and the guy said with Remington it could be 2 weeks or 2 months. Did not want to order anything else till my income tax comes back. I seen the Rem 180 SJHP they were 8.90 for a box of 100. The XTP's were 12.94 for a box of 100. I'll order some Rem. 180 later on and some 200 grainers as well.

Yeah, I forgot they have that minimum thing now. Once upon a time.......back in the good ole days Midway shipping was free, prices were a little higher but free shipping made up for it. Oh well, at least you'll be 'rollin' yer own.' 8)  8)

Going Sat. to get primers and check and see what powder my local shops and Walmart have. Hope the reamer shows up tomorrow. I'm going to shoot the postal match with the 357 mag before I max it. I'll shoot a card afterwards and see which is more accurate.

Yes 338, I put the 3-9x40 off my 7mm-08 on it. It was sight in real good and with the 357 it was not off to much. Just need to fine tune it. Then see what kinda of groups I can get with it. Shooting standing up with a leaning rest at about 40 yards I could keep all them in a 3 inch circle. I know the gun will do better if the operator takes his time. After the postal match I plan on putting a 4x32 on it.
