I admit I'm confused. What did he really mean with legitimate rape being that there is no such thing, at least I never heard of it.

If he meant justified abortion he sure expressed himself poorly.

I'm not trying to justify what he said, because I do think he's a complete moron, but I would guess he was trying to distinguish a difference between rape as a criminally aggressive assault and "false claims" of rape based on a woman having morning-after regrets.  I've seen examples of the latter time and time again in the military when a woman tries to salvage her "reputation" by throwing "rape" into the explanation of why she ended up doing the walk-of-shame after the deed was done.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

I can explain this whole thieng: the guy is pro-life, he stepped in it verbally, and now the pro-choice gang wants to paint him as anti-women. Listening to NPR this morning, one of them types nailed it: she said he needs to aplogize, and he needs to be pro-choice (I'm paraphrasing).

Nothing much here. For years I'm said call the pro-choice crowd's bluff: tell 'em you'll support abortion in EVERY case of 'rape, incest, life of the mother...' if in return, they'll give up supporting it for any other reasons.

Dead silence - that 'rape, incest, life of the mother...' slogan is about making it hard to be anti-abortion, without getting tarred as anti-woman. Pure BS.

Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

I live in Missouri but Akin is not my congressman. This isn't the first time he has said something strange. He has always had a talent for inartfully stating his opinions or maybe just not thinking as he speaks. Missouri law requires that he drop out by 5 p.m. Tuesday (tomorrow) in order that another canidate take his place on the ballot, otherwise even if he is forced to drop out his name will remain on the ballot. It will be interesting to see if the movers and shakers of the party force him out to run another canidate against McCaskill.

He tried to retract it by saying it was an off the cuff comment. If you actually heard him say it in the interview it was a very slow reply and appeared to be a thought out answer not just a quick off the cuff reply.

Can someone explain to me what "legitimate rape" is? I kinda sorta thought it was a criminal offense all over this nation and a felony at that. So what constitutes a legitimate rape?

I live in Mo also, and I feel sorry for the guy. Even Claire helped to set him up , she even cut out her adds against him, and ran adds favorable to him.  He thought he won, that his position was so popular, so right, just like the ugliest geek at the prom who thought that  the head of the cheerleading squad really thought he was cool. Then after he walks out blindfolded, naked and spray painted onto the dance floor he begins to see the reality of the situation.  I have no doubt that he meant what he said. That is also sad, because it shows an ignorance so profound that there really is no recovery. It is as sad as someone bringing Oreo's to the office because he heard his cookies were deleted. I voted for Sarah, she would have been the best candidate. As much as I despise Claire, I could not vote for this guy if he was running against a sack of dog manure. I may have to vote straight Libertarian.

Technically, I guess.. a legitimate rape would be someone who had it coming to them. Kinda like...taking a life is legitimate if its done by the government.....I guess...

Maybe a legitimate rape is one that happens when no other crimes are committed leading up to, during and shortly after the rape act........So an example of this would be.......................................... ::)

In any case....if the rape occurs during the commission of a normal relationship that normally does not have an intimate component, then at some point during that normal relationship a rape happens and there are no injuries to the raped, then this perhaps could, technically be classified as "legitimate" as long as their was no conception, during that rape. ::)

I think he meant "legitimate" as in "bona fide" or "real" as opposed to someone who has consensual sex and later claims she was raped. He's still a moron if he thinks rape never produces offspring. If he were right, there would never be any kittens!  ;) It just shows that a local politician might not be an appropriate candidate in a national election. Look at Romney and Ryan!  ;D ;D ;D

Also, I guess this means legitimate shooting and stabbing victims do not bleed. If he does not drop out, he just gave the seat to his opponent.  ::)

And we all know that no democrat in the history of the world ever said anything stupid like "Navy Corpse-man" or "57 states" or told a woman who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head that he too was a member of "the hole in the head club" or asked a man that was wheelchair bound to "stand up Chuck let 'em see ya!" or talked about "the leaders here in Asia" while he was in Hawaii or said "we are the nation that built the intercontinental railroad!" or said "I bowled a 129 it was like the special olympics or something"  or told a black audience "they are gonna put y'all back in chains!" or said "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man." I could go on and on but there is just no sport in it.

guzzi. For you to have to ask proves to me that liberals do indeed see things backwards. He meant that if the rape was indeed rape and not a guilty conscience the next day. POWDERMAN.  ::) ::)

I didn't read every post but what the guy was saying (though a stupid way to say it ) was in some cases women give consent then change their mind. Others they do not. When they do not its might be considered legit to call it rape where in the mind changing case it was not rape and therefore is not legit .
There is a woman in the area that had dated several men ( a couple I know ) who upon them breaking up will have them arrested for rape. It gets thrown out of court but it happens.

I was more referring to his over the top statement that a woman's body will not allow pregnancy if it is a "legitimate" rape. So, is the child still illegitimate if it was a legitimate rape? ::)

'Legitimate rape'  What that buffoon meant was forceible rape. Forced upon an UNwilling victim. This would be different from 'Statutory' where the victim is willing but to young to consent. He feels that forceible rape is less likely to cause pregnancy. This of course has no scientific basis and is stupid at best. Good stuff for the demos, they want ANYTHING to distract frome this disaster prone prez.         P.A.
