Crazy old man ?
« on: August 20, 2012, 12:48:56 AM »
  I guess some would look at it that way..and since I will be 76 yrs old this big game season (Nov-Dec), I guess that could be justified..seeing I just bought a new rifle.  Actually, my wind is very good and outside some visits by old.. Arthur Itis  himself, I get around pretty good in the woods.
    Last year, as I often do..I passed on my Marlin 30/30 to my grandson, thinking my H&R 243 would suffice for deer/black bear season...and it probably would.  ...But I got the "new rifle" urge; perhaps some of you guys recognize that!  ;)
   I visited my nearby gun shop and looked over my dealer's supply of rifles.  He is a more-or-less Savage fan...as I am.  But going through the usual routine of shouldering and aiming rifles..one fell to my hands and shoulder as if it were 'made for me'.
     Anyway, after researching the various rifles and finding that most testers were getting MOA or sub-MOA with these rifles, I put down my $$ for a new Ruger American.  http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2012/01/04/ruger-american-rifle/
     Since my military experience was with M1s and M14s..and I grew to really appreciate the .308 cartridge... that's what I picked up.
   What convinced me?  Well, several things besides the stated accuracy potential with the hammer forged barrel, there was the 70 degree lift on the bolt, (hold position and work bolt with index and second finger), plus the heft and swing of the rifle.
  Then, there is the Ruger rotary magazine..4 rounds in a magazine which fits flush and smooth with the stock.  The rifle is light weight (6.12 lbs), good for woods walking..but of course, may make the shoulder pay more.
  There is no monte carlo...but since this rifle is intended to be used with a scope, the regular stock sets the eye right on line with scope level.  The bolt operates slick and smooth and the semi-hexgonal shape of the action is pleasant (to my eye) along with the long, slender barrel  Lists at MSRP $450..but should go "out the door" at about $350..mine was a bit less, but that's just my friendly, local dealer.
    So..how did they keep the price down..neither the bolt nor the bolt handle ae polished..just machined steel, the stock is synthetic and cannot be easily replaced since the rotary magazine is integral with the synthetic stock. The bluing is not polished..but rather a matte finish (I actually prefer this for hunting).
   Another plus..an effective, adjustable trigger & scope mounts at no extra cost.

ironglow:  what is so crazy about that?  I would love to get a new rifle when I'm 76, and bag a freezer full every season on.  I would definately go with a 30 caliber something unless I could find one in 260.

I bought a savage axis a few weeks ago in 223. If there had been a ruger offered in 223 I would have bought it. I believe it is a much better rifle than the axis and I am not a big ruger fan.

Congrats on your new Ruger American and being able to hunt another season.

I've handled a few of the Americans in local stores and kinda like it too.  Unfortunately, have some decent rifles already in cartridges its made in.

But when you get a chance to shoot your American, please post again telling us your thoughts on its accuracy and etc.

Good for you Iron!  I'm wait'n on a TIKKA Hunter (243win) in blue with the wood stock and fluted barrel (wanted something a bit different than the usual remingrugers). Been wait'n since July 1st...will give it another month or 2 and then....a Ruger American.

Please let us know how it shoots.

You can call me crazzy when I stop wanting sex and guns.  At 66, I'm slowing down on my performance but not my desire for either.

Walmart had the Ruger Americans for a lot less than $300.00.

  Now you tell me Swampy!  ;)   ;D
   My local Walmart didn't have any and I'm sure the the Walmarts differ..
    My  local Wally-World (about 16 miles away)  runs about neck & neck with my aforementioned dealer, pricewise.
  In fact, the last gun I purchased was a Savage 93F in .22 Mag..my dealer had it on the shelf for $179..it HAD to go home with me..and Walmart couldn't touch the price.  ...Wallys do differ.

  My #3 grandson is about to consider a Tikka T3, since he wants a walnut stock and a bit finer finish.  He wants one that is appealing to his friends also...while I'm a guy who likes the old adage.."form follows function".. ;)
     Don't their dealers normally carry several in stock, or did you order something very special in that Tikka...or is there normally quite a wait?  Perhaps if he were to order one now, he may not get it in time for big game here(mid November).

Glad to hear you are still out and about at your age, Ironglow. I'm right behind you. I'm staring 75 years right in the eye.

I'll also be out in the boonies this fall and winter, just not for deer. It's just too much trouble to hunt deer with all the rules and regulations we have in this state now. I'll be out after coyotes and we have a lot more of those than deer. I'm not looking for food, just some good time outdoors.

  Hey Pal;
   What did they do to your deer hunting?  Here, I figured NM to be pretty much a freedom oriented state...

They went to a draw system a few years ago and and I just don't want to deal with it. Maybe I'm just set in my ways and getting crotchety in my old age. Deer population isn't so great anymore either and I just don't feel it's worth the effort.

Mostly it is a pretty free place. Very leinent gun laws although the concealed carry deal is rather expensive. There is a tremendous amount of public land to prowl around in and open carry is legal. There are several other pluses but I won't go into them now.

They had them for $258.00 for awhile.  A Model 700 is $399.00 and 10 times the gun.

Ironglow , hope it works out well for you. It sounds like a good gun and you supported a local business instead of a box store . Hope you get lots of game with it.

IG  Now quit fiddling around with the computer and get out and get us a range report. I like all the stuff Ruger says in their adds, but I've had several Rugers that disappointed me. Looks like Ruger borrowed heavily from the Mossberg 800.

  Billmac;
       I'm waiting on my K-4 Weaver to come through...I do consider the Ruger "Marksman" adjustable trigger a great free-of-charge bennie though. ;D
  Scotsman: Your Savage Axis is still a good buy..can't deny the Savage accuracy..

   Borrowed from the Mossberg?  I think they are all doing a bit of "borrowing". ;)   Have you noticed how the newer rifles tend to look like one-another ?
