Taming recoil

I have a 20 gauge Topper and just love it for general woods bumming due to it's light weight. Because of the weight it's does rock me pretty good with heavier field loads and slugs. I have a Pachmyr recoil pad on it and was thinking about adding some weight in the stock to help dampen some of the recoil.

Any ideas or thoughts on recoil reduction with this shotgun would be appreciated.

Stock weight will help, especially if you fill the stock bolt hole with lead shot.

 I`d try low-base loads.  If they come in the size that fit your needs that might help out on the recoil part. On the slugs, you on your own.

Before you do anything like that, check out the Limbsaver slip on recoil pads. I have a Tracker 11 20 gauge that was really painful to shoot from a benchrest when sighting in, but the Limbsaver reduced recoil I would say 60 to 70%   You'll need to take the old recoil pad off and usually the small size fits Handi Rifles- there not cheap but well worth it.

+1 on the Limbsaver.  I have a small and a medium I switch around to different guns depending on what fits.  The Winchester brand in Salmart is the same thing for 19 bucks.  I found that out about 2 months after paying full price for the first one.  hehe

Wouldn't adding weight defeat the purpose of carrying a lighter 20 Ga.?
 
I put a Remington Supercell pad on mine as I did not want a slip-on. It doesn't fit perfect but it is just a hair off.  It was also about $19.  The details are in this previous post:
