New .17HMR inbound
« on: August 22, 2012, 01:05:17 PM »
Just ordered a .17HMR from the local toy store.
I've seen tests where they have shortened and then chronographed loads. The end result was that there was only 50fps difference between 17" and 22".
Has anyone trimmed their .17 HMR and can give some input on accuracy / ballistics / convenience?

Do appreciate it.

Most of the tests show closer to 25 fps to 100 fps per inch depending on caliber.
Here's one interesting article: http://www.anzioironworks.com/barrel_length_vs_fps.htm
These guys have done testing on lots of calibers too:  http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/calibers.html
Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that they have with the 17 HMR yet.

As the OP mentioned, Bullberry tested 17hmr barrel lengths, any legal rifle barrel length will not loose much velocity over a full length factory barrel.

Good to know Tim, I added that one to my links of barrel length mod data.  ;)
