what crisis ?
« on: August 23, 2012, 02:00:21 AM »
What crisis do you feel will happen ? What will you do ? How do you know ? We all have some skills . We all have some supplies . We all have a weapon . So what do you think will happen ? Will the election spark a negative reaction ? Will weather events cause it ? Civil unrest ? Invasion ? Immigration problems ? The Health care reform ? Will it be national or local ?
One skill often overlooked is the ablity to see what is happening to do something in time to save yourself or at least lessen the blow. Also the skill to bond with others ( the correct ones ) that will insure your's and their mutual safety . People skills might be a good skill to have ? I watched some of the survival shows that were on and the bunker was an expensive option. It looks to be the ticket until you consider that the force you may face might be larger that you can handle. You say so what I will bunker down until they go away. I would ask what happens if they build a huge bonfire on top your bunker ?
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Shootall,

I'm not convinced that there will ever be a crises, but in reality, it doesn't matter how the crises occurs (economic collapse, civil unrest, pandemic,  etc.), then end scenario is always the same.  Bands of military, paramilitary, militia, citizens and criminals roaming around, executing who they want and taking what they want.   In other words, think Serbia during the Bosnian conflict and ethnic cleansing.

And, if any of these groups focus on you and want you out, then you and yours are gone, period, end of story.

Sorry, but that's how I see it.

I don't think much will happen either, beyond natural disasters here and there. We have a society of sheep. As long as the starbucks is open and they can get the latest ipad all is well. There will of coarse be more govt control over the years. But just the same outcome as has already happened. A lot of pissing and moaning and that's about it.

Of the scenarios I think an emp is plausible, but not probable. If that happened, I have the old livestock driven machinery and know how to use it. I do use diesel, but could limit production substantially and go to mechanical. Currently I grow all the food my animals need. Could downsize and raise only animals for consumption. The main problem would be keeping folks at bay when everyone is starving. Good guy Greg next door could be a handful if he is watching little Sally starve to death, much less the average POS. If my food and animals were wiped out I could get by on what grows wild, and support a few more. Plenty of wild edibles in my area. The trick would be to not get shot by good guy Greg before it came to that point.

Maybe a depression? That would be catastrophic in today's America. We no longer grow the majority of our own food. The endangered animals have closed down the majority of USA farmland for human consumption. Most folks don't know how to be self sufficient. The majority of those that think they can have no practical knowledge, only book smarts as they would say. So in my mind things look bleak if the average fellow doesn't have the money to buy food from the store.

I tend to agree mostly because areas of our nation face crisis each year and get thru. just fine . BUT there are the areas where enough people are already trained to look for hand outs again New Oleans is a good example.

I really hope nothing happens but I don't think we can avoid an economic collapse at this point. The next election will determine how bad it will be. On our current path it will be very bad. IMO this would lead to food shortages (as well as shortages of everything else needed for daily living), civil unrest and martial law. In that situation, I feel a large portion of the military would not turn on US citizens. Depending on the views of who is leading the country at that point, they may be tempted to bring in UN/foreign troops to control the people. I pray this never happens but that is what I feel is the biggest threat to the entire nation.

Very close to my thoughts, bands of UN soldiers roaming around could trigger a civil war of sorts.

New Orleans and how people reacted by just waiting for someone to help them, and feed them, instead of acting responsible and helping themselves (either by evacuating when warned, or having a plan to not need to be rescued...).  Remember also it was mostly outsiders (from large cities) who did the most looting, not the locals.
