Turnips again.
« on: August 24, 2012, 05:19:55 PM »
I sowed turnips a month ago, over 400 sq ft of ground. Maybe a dz came up. Sat I tilled again, actually raised a bit of dust, and sowed again. I watered after I raked the seed in, then we got 6 tenths in of rain, I've watered 2 more times since, including today, but nothing up yet. It was new seed, just that dry. I look forward to turnips every year. Can hardly wait. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I've had a turnip or two, but never grew any.  What type things do you do with them?  I'm surprised you can start anything this late in the year.  Hope they start sprouting soon for you.

Purple top is what I grow too.  Great fresh, in soups (they add flavor to broths, but cook away to mush so can also be used to thicken slightly), steamed they are not so good, but seasoned properly are edible.  The greens are best for cooking though.

Thought I planted turnips and ended up with the darndest stand of mustard greens I've ever seen.  Guess it don't matter.  Dad is going to have enough turnips for the whole county and I'll supply the greens.

i disced up a plot and planted sum turnips 2 weeks ago.we had a lil dab of rain and the dirt was slightly moist.but by the time i got done discing it was pretty dry.i spread the seed with a hand crank seeder and them ran a small cultipacker over it.with no more rain, they are now thicker than hair on a dogs back.even tho i broadcast the seed it came up in rows showing where the cultipacker ran.i was up ther today and even tho it dry as heck they are growing. but if we dont get a rain soon i look for them to die.

i eat a lot of turnips and greens in the winter as do my rabbits.without them it will be a hardship.

I planted some turnips, kale and lettuce last week.  Mixed the seed with some triple 13 and pelletized lime and scattered in rows.  Got a half inch rain today so they should be up pretty soon.

I noticed a very few poking up today but even after all the water I've put on and the dab of rain this week the ground is really dry. I'll water again tomorrow evening.
Like em peeled and cut in bite size chunks, put em in a bowl with a bit of butter and nuke em for about 5 min, then saltn pepper to taste. We also like them sliced and fried with potatoes and onions together. Plain ol boiled is good too. Pretty hard to hurt a turnip. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Since I don't care for the Turnips themselves & my wife does, I plant a mix of Seven Top & Purple Top.  Mine have been in the ground for less than a week & with no rain they're not up yet.  I also plant Mustard, Kale & Rape.

I watered again last nite. I'm going to commit my last bbl of rain water tomorrow evening in anticipation of rain this weekend. Whats up is patchy and just peeping through. The dz or so that came up from the 1st sowing look good, these 95 deg days don't help either. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

WE did get rain, turnips are great. I'm eating one raw rt now, had fried taters and turnips for supper last night. Gave away a bucket full too.
Yesterday I pulled the last of my green onions and pulled all the tomato plants, stakes and cages. Nothing there but turnips now. Had some fried green tomaters nite for last, mighty good. I saved the green tomatoes from the plants and will probably just let them ripen. Looking forward to next year. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Still no killing frost and had a bumper crop of turnips. Been giving bucket fulls away. I thought about selling a bunch to a local store just a bit down the road, but decided not to. I've never sold anything from my garden and saw no reason to start now. I believe that God blesses us so that we can bless others. WE took several bucket fulls to a local food bank last week and they didn't last long, taking more tomorrow. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Don't you southerners get tired of gardening all year?? It has been zero the last couple nights here. A few more days of this and I can go ice fishing. Don't need no skeeter dope.

The only time spent in a winter garden are planting and picking just about. If you have rape and kale planted you might have to shoot some deer out of them to keep them from eating the greens up. Plenty of time to fish if you want to. Greens, hushpuppies, onion slices and some fried catfish or deer steaks. Worth waiting on.   ;D   ear

A good chuck roast with potatoes, onions, and carrots just isn't the same without a few turnips. I planted Tall Tine Tubers and they are getting just the right size. I'm tempted to cover some with leaves to see if they will stand the frost for a while. I have posted signs alerting the deer that this is not a food plot and if they are caught tresspassing they will be shot on sight!

With corn a big bust this year, the neighbors have sowed radishes to feed on the extra nitrate. Others with cattle did aerial seeding of 7 top turnips around august. Cows have put on about a hundred pounds ea. With lousy pastures all summer, they probably think they've died and gone to cow heaven. A few more hundred and they will. :)
