Employee Appreciation Day
« on: August 25, 2012, 05:42:54 AM »
The time is at hand again to have an employee apprecition day barbeque for the people that work for me. Myself and the supervisors that work me set everything up do the cooking and clean up.The cost for burgers, dogs or some deer or elk steaks really isn't bad. We take a Friday afternoon once a year and do this. The workers just have to show up eat our barbeque, relax and enjoy a couple of hours without having to do anything. I put everyones name in a hat and draw out a few names for different prizes that come out of my own pocket. Nothing really expensive a new pocket knife etc. hand out safety awards, length of service awards and some goofy things.
My counter part from a different division asked how much turn out there was. I said 100 % and it's not mandatory. He said he had to make his functions mandatory or people just wouldn't show up. He explained he tasked the rank and file to set up tables grills etc and then charged 10 bucks a head for them to attend. He can't figure out why people want to take a vacation day from his barbeque.

If you appreciate the folks working for you, you need to let them know. Cooking lunch for them and giving out a few prizes once a year is very cheap for what it buys. Some people just don't get it and probably never will.

An outstanding thing that you are doing. Show people that you appreciate them and they will return the favor. Maybe your counterpart from the other division will see the light.

Your counterpart is an idiot, plain and simple. Would he try that approach to host a customer appreciation day? A person can go home set his own table cook exactly what he wants the way he likes it, for less than $10. Plus he doesn't lose any payed hours at work? I like most of the folks I work with but I also spend plenty of time with them at work. What have I missed here?

It comes off as a chore that corporate requires him to do against his will. By his actions that is exactly what it is too. He likely does not appreciate his employees, viewing them as liabilities, tools used in the process, changing them out like worn bearings.

Kudos to you, as it is apparent, you don't share his view.

Thanks guys. I could never have gotten where I am without the great folks around me. When schedules get crazy and things look very difficult you know you got great people that can carry the load. Saying thank you to them for making you look good is the least you can do.
