Tools! What are they and do I need 'em ALL?
« on: February 07, 2004, 06:56:21 PM »
Thanks DB looks like just what I was needin'.  I sure would like to know a few things about leatherworking tools and what I might already have and not know it:

Grooving tool:  never seen one.  Is it something that will cut a groove of fixed depth and width a measured distance from the edge that you run your stitches in?  Seems like you can't make your own or am I wrong?

Edge beveler:  a knife that cuts an angle off the edge of a straight cut?  Could you do that with a careful Xacto knife?

Edge slicker:  Sounds like the back of a spoon might do it or am I way off base?

Overstitch wheel:  could you use a sewing wheel (like a small spur) and go through every other mark?

Rawhide mallet:  wood would do for a beginner?

I got the punches and Dremel, and all the sail repair needles and thread I could ask for, but would like to try my hand at leatherwork without buying every shiny beginning hobbyists tool right off the bat until I'm sure I need it (done that a lot - anybody need a powder trickler or an ingot mold?).

Any kind of help would sure be appreciated.  Let's you get this forum up and runnin'!  Thanks pard

For stitching leather you might try getting the Al Stohlman "How to Sew Leather" book, as well the Stohlman leathercraft tools book is a must have.
as for your specific questions the better quality saddlers stitching groover

is better than the cheaper model that Tandy sells.

The freehand groover is a handy item too.

the over stitch wheel is a stitching spacer they come in various sizes a number 5 is 5 stitch per inch and a 7 is 7 spi.... but you use this over the stitching to finess it a bit too.

the edge bevelers come in various sizes too, but the likliehood of an exacto being controllable enough don't even bother with it you will just get depressed when you destroy your project.

yes you could use a spoon for a slicker but the metal will likely leave black marks on the damp leather better would be a piece of plexiglass rod or the cheap slicking wheel that Tandy sells for 2 dollars, or my favorite a bone folder this is 3 dollars and can do about 4 different jobs
creasing edge slicking, and of course folding.
though you can just use a piece of course canvas.....

I like this stitching awl. costs 20 bucks but it is far superior to the one that they sell in the sewing kit.

I don't like the sewing awl but it has it's place too.

Bottom line is the right tools will make it easier on you to produce a good project, with a lot less frustration.

Ya got some good advice there from Roy...

I suppose a wood mallet would work but over time you will wish ya had a polly mallet or rawhide one.

As for sewing not sure what size sail repair needles are but they might work.  But at 4 bucks for 10 good needles I would just get some from the leather supply houses.

Good luck and we look forward to seeing some of your projects.

Agreed DB I woul drecommend the 14 Oz poly mallet (you won't wear this thing out at all.
As for the needles get the saddlers needles you really don't want a sharp point like you would for sewing cloth.

Thanks Roy an' DB!  That's exactly what I was Looking for!  I suspect my first project will be dyed O-Positive but I'm anxious to put my huge bag of various sized hide hunks I've been collecting to work.  Them wonderful pictures and the sites (Tandy kind of scared me off at fir$t) and books you suggest are something I've been looking for fer a long time.  See you right here!

Glad to be able to help I hope you get the joy out of leatherworking that I do!
I get to see my dad again everytime I do any leather work. He used to do all kinds of leatherwork, I get closer to him everytime. He passed away in 91. I was never so happy as when the Tandy store opened up, again, here in town.
Don't let Tandy's prices scare you off.
If you take to leather work you can spend the dough to join their "Wholesale club" and save a bundle when you buy leather.
makes a big difference when you are buying full sides and double shoulders.
